I have overwritten my UBB.threads configuration files!

Don't panic, there are several things that can be done.Restore from a backupFirst, if you had the forethought to keep complete backups, you'll want to restore your cache_builderscustom and includes folders, and your styleswrapper.php file. If you, for whatever reason, don't have a backup of your forum files which we'd highly recommend that you setup now, so this won't become an issue in the future, you can continue below.Restore from configbak.inc.phpIn UBB.threads v7.6.1 when the configuration file is written to, a backup file is created configbak.inc.php. This file can be utilized for disaster recovery just simply save a copy of the file to your hard disk thus backing it up, and upload it to your includes folder as config.inc.php. You'll be missing any of your latest changes, as the file is only written to when you submit changes in the Control Panel, but it's better from starting from a blank configuration.Restore from a Blank ConfigurationThe standard upgrade procedure is to not overwrite your cache_builderscustom or includes folders, or your styleswrappers.php file as these files contain unique configuration options for your site. If you find yourself having overwritten these files and you don't have a backup to restore them from, you'll need to start anew. For your includesconfig.inc.php file you'll need to download a Blank Configuration File, and open it in plaintext editor such as Notepad or EditPlus and not in an editor which can add formatting such as Word or Wordpad. You'll want to look at the database connection lines at the top of the file 'DATABASE_SERVER' 'localhost', 'DATABASE_USER' 'SQL_DB_User', 'DATABASE_PASSWORD' 'SQL_DB_Pass', 'DATABASE_NAME' 'SQL_DB_Name', 'TABLE_PREFIX' 'ubbt_',Once you've populated these fields with your database connection information you'll want to upload the file to your includes folder, overwriting the existing blank file. You should now be able to login to your forums and set all of the settings in the Control Panel.

Six Steps to a Successful Online Community

IntroductionText Box customers gain a lot of value from interacting with one another and often find that the community aspect of a Website is what makes them feel taken care of. Patricia Seybold, Customers.comThe World Wide Web is not a network of computers, it is a network of human beings.Online communities have been around since the very inception of the Web. In fact, you could say that the Web itself is one huge online community, composed of humans interacting for various purposes. Some are searching for entertainment, some profit, and some the betterment of society.Regardless of your particular purpose on the Web, at some point someone in your organization is bound to suggest having a community. Usually the next step is to start evaluating software, but if you want your online community to be an asset to the bottom line, the steps in this white paper will help you achieve that goal. In other words, don't start with the technology, start with a plan!Step One Define the Purpose of Your CommunityIt's been demonstrated time and again that individuals who set written goals are much more likely to achieve them. Try an experiment todaywrite down one thing you wish to accomplish by the end of the day. This evening, see whether you have achieved it or not you did, didn't you. This same premise works with any goal, business or otherwise. Your online community won't be successful unless you know what you're trying to achieve with it!Here are some examples be as detailed as possible when you write yours To facilitate usertouser support, thereby decreasing internal technical support costs To attract more traffic and increase repeat visits to my Web site To promote awareness of a new TV show, movie, book, or play you fill in the blank To offer a public forum for constituent or customer feedback value and convenience enhanced for the customer To provide an online searchable knowledge base that improves customer access to information about my company and decreases phone calls To make it easier and more costeffective for engineers who are in different time zones to collaborate on a specific project decrease travel and longdistance expensesThe purpose for your community should be defined before you do anything else, even before you select a technology, because your purpose may drive the technology selection. For example, if your purpose is engineering group collaboration, ensure that your community application can support file attachments. If your purpose is consumer feedback, you need technology that can support polls and ratings.Step Two Plan to Integrate with the Corporate MissionYour online community's purpose should be tightly integrated with the rest of the organization's Web strategy. For example, if you are a corporation whose primary reason for being online is ecommerce, ensure that your online community provides opportunities to discuss and purchase your products. If you are a highend design firm whose primary purpose online is to showcase the company portfolio and designers, you may want to showcase your design skills by customizing the online community.Something to think about when choosing a community technology is whether it will easily integrate with the rest of the elements on your existing Web site. Find out whether you can share membership login information, pull chunks of information from the community onto other Web pages, or completely customize the interface. Each of these things adds to the seamless experience your visitors deserve.Simply put, your online community should not be just another goodie on your Web site. Most successful organizations have financial goals and a clearly defined business mission. Your investment in online community should be a contributor to that bottom line. However, you'll never know whether it is or not if you aren't setting up expectations from the very outset. Arm yourself with knowledge of how the corporate financial goals are set, as well as the Web strategy financial goals, and create financial goals for your online community.Your community technology should also assist you in evaluating its financial return. Look for an application that will allow you to track vital statistics, such as member activity and growth in member registrations. If you plan to charge a fee for membership in your online community, you'll need technology that will allow you to differentiate between paid and unpaid members for example, you could have public forums accessible to all and private forums accessible only to paid members. If your typical revenue online is derived from advertising, start thinking of creative ways to integrate ads within the online community. Some community technology will allow you to go far beyond the generic banner ad, allowing you to feed smaller, more targeted ad information directly within the community interface. The bottom line is that if your online community is going to be either a revenuegenerating or costsavings asset, you need to configure it that way from the very beginning. Every step you take in setting up the community should reflect your financial goals.Step Three Measuring and Reporting the ROIOnce the financial goals in place, you'll need to determine whether you're achieving them. Whether it's on a monthly, weekly, or daily basis, you need to know about the health of your community investment. If you plan to measure ROI, your technology selection should reflect that desire. So you've planned for success, you've integrated the financial goals of your community with those of the company, you've got a fantastic community manager, your membership is growing, and you're meeting those lofty revenue goals. Now you will need an application that provides reports and analytical tools to help you communicate with others in your organization. It is important to let everyone in your organization know that the investment in community is a key part of the company's strategic mission.Choose a community technology that will allow you to track the growth in membership, highlight the most active members and forums, and export the data in a usable format for integration with other reports. Ideally, your community technology vendor will also provide you with some preconfigured reports and statistics, to make this job even easier.Step Four Care and Feeding of the communityA community is a living, growing entity that must be nurtured and tended like a vegetable garden. Without a gardener i.e., community manager, the harvest will be slim. Communities that thrive are ones in which the administrator and moderators are knowledgeable, not only in the technology, but also in the establishment of human connections. This entails pulling the weeds, i.e., banning disruptive visitors and adding fertilizer, i.e., maintaining an active presence in the community.Text Box Collaborative marketing occurs when you listen as the customer speaks, and when you invite a customer to participate in actually making the product. Don Peppers and Martha Rogers, The One to One Future Building Relationships One Customer at a TimeFor a largescale, active community, you will need both a community manager or administrator and moderators for the forums. The good news is that you can often recruit excellent volunteer moderators from within the community in fact, that is one of the best ways to foster loyalty.Duties of the community manager include setting the physical structure of the community, performing the initial configuration of the community, developing the rulesterms of service, determining the overall tone and purpose of the group, and supervising the moderators.Duties of the forum moderators include initiating conversation, providing responsiveness within the forums, banning disruptive visitors, keeping forums ontopic by moving or editing posts as necessary, offering advice to newcomers, and generally providing leadership within the community.A final note on staffing your communitybe sure that your staff is very clear on the goals you have set. For example, if the purpose of the community is customer support, and your financial goal is to reduce technical support staff costs internally, then you need to be sure that the community manager and moderators are highly responsive, that volunteer experts are valued and retained to serve as peer advisors, and that customers can easily find the information they seek with fast search engines and clear forum names.A common mistake in some organizations is to launch a community simply by providing a technology on the Web site that allows visitors to interact. This, by itself, is not enough. The most successful communities are those that grow and thrive and have activity throughout the day. If Web site visitors are not providing the level of activity you desire, internal resources should be enlisted to post messages and participate. Nothing kills a community faster than monthold messages with no replies. The following are some tips for injecting excitement into your community Turnover of content post topics and replies using your own staff for a brief period, if you must, but make sure the content is fresh. Pruningarchiving old content unless you're building a large FAQ database with your community, prunedelete ancient messages to keep it efficient and lively, or create archivedreadonly forums for material that should still be available for searching. Contests and polls create interesting activity that invites community members to interact and return on a regular basis. Recurring themes or events movie trivia Friday, e.g. create a reason for members to return regularly, and to schedule visits to your community. Special icons or names for particular usersrewards for frequent posters nothing invites loyalty like a reward encourage visitors who start interesting topics or who frequently participate by giving them special status e.g., VIP Member. Ensure that the technology doesn't inhibit growth particularly when your community is experiencing success and peak traffic, make sure that your technology solution can scale with your growth.Step Five Promote the CommunityWhat's the easiest, most important way you can attract traffic to your community Make it easy to find! Here are some practical tips on making your community easy to find Link to your main forum page from your Web site's Home page. This is especially important if your site is divided into main areas, or channels like Movies, Lifestyle, Books, etc.. You should always have a front door into your main forum page from the Home page, even if your movie section has its own special forum or category. Use a name for the link that's obvious e.g., Forums, Message Board, or Community, rather than CyberCafe, Joe's Place, or BB. Promote the existence and location of your community in your Web site News section, in press releases, or other marketing campaigns. Create a special icon or button for your community to differentiate it from other links on your Home page. AND MOST IMPORTANTLYAllow unregistered visitors to your Web site to view the main forum page. Even if you are offering the forums as a benefit only to paying members, it's a great idea to allow nonmembers to see what they're missing! It goes without saying that you should ensure that your technology will allow you to secure or restrict some or all of your forums.Step Six Know and Serve Your Community MembersUse your online community as a means of establishing oneonone relationships with your customers. Whether the community is provided for direct customer support or for marketing and traffic generation, it is crucial that you get to know the people who are participating. For example, what segment of your audience is female, over 35, and enjoys parasailing The registration information provided by community members can be invaluable in analyzing the audience, particularly if your technology allows you to collect customized information for example, you could ask what type of computer hardware the member is using. Getting to know your community members will enhance your ability to serve their needs, and maximize your opportunities to serve targeted information to them.Online communities can also allow you to move beyond the standard banner ad. If your technology permits, you can serve targeted ads and information within the actual community itself. No marketing is stronger than wordofmouth and personal recommendations, and online communities are a fantastic mechanism for incontext recommendation and purchasing. To learn more about how Groupee can help you increase site traffic, acquire customers virally, extend your brand and enhance customer relations, please contact sales online httpwww.infopop.comqq.phpactionpool_querynum22We'd be happy to help you get started!

What happened to Picupload?

What happened to PicuploadPicupload was a modification for UBB.threads v7.5.x, created by David Hale which allowed for the simple upload and embed of image files into a post. The resulting uploaded images would display within the post versus displaying as an attachment. So, what's stockThe stock attachment manager left a lot to be desired it's seen very little updates since it was first added to UBB.threads. In v7.6.0 we updated the stock UBB.threads upload manager and enhanced the overall system, so that uploaded images display as thumbnails that can be clicked and opened with Lightbox.Since files are managed through UBB.threads they can be managed, and removed from the server, by the users who uploaded them additionally, the system respects the UBB.threads attachment settings and group permissions, and the system is mobile capable.Problems with Picupload1 It does not natively handle files that are not images If you allow file attachments other than images you're not going to be able to upload them.2 It disables the builtin file attachment settings Basically, it doesnt respect the forum settings for attachments. You can only upload files with .jpg or .png extensions not including .jpeg, even though the specified 'ATTACHMENT_TYPES' '.gif,.jpg,.jpeg,.png,.css,.txt,.pdf,.gz,.rar,.tar,.tgz,.zip' allows for them3 The elements in the interface buttons are too tiny to tap on, making the page difficult to use for mobile users.4 If you click or tap, on mobile outside of the picupload window, you've lost everything you uploaded EXCEPT the file still sits on the forum's servers or these files may just sit in a temp directory until XX criteria is met.5 There is no count to show how many things you've attached once you leave the window.6 It adds another database table, one where the files and date dont get pruned when you delete posts or topics with attachments.7 No official upgrade path from version to version of UBB.threads It's a modification, and is not maintained by the developers of UBB.threads, so changes to UBB.threads can ultimately result in the script no longer functioning.8 If the file names have spaces, they are stored on the server also with those spaces. exa mp le.jpg9 If you upload a file on a Linux server that begins with a dot, and the file will be hidden .example.jpg10 If you upload a file, then preview it in a post and decide that you no longer want it, you cannot just go back and delete it from the server. You can remove it from showing in a post, but it will still stay on the server. To expand on 10, if I submit the post. then read it and want to make changes with EDITPOST, I have no access to the file, it still exists on the server somewhere. I can remove the url link from my post content, but this does not control the actual file, and I cannot remove the old one. So, if I have topic where I constantly update the post to have attachments of a new version of my screenshotdocumentsoftware file, I cannot remove the old version screenshotsversions form the server. but can upload additional screenshotsversions.

Are there any issues with allowing "Special Characters in Display Names"?

There are issues with the Special Characters in Display Names feature of UBB.threads, and it's generally just considered a bad idea on multiple levels A malicious user can create an account which appears to be a duplicate of another account.Example A admin has the user name of, Mark and the malicious user could create a user name of, muark Greek capital letter mu. This cat and mouse game of trying to block all the possibilities just for that one name, could go on very long. Not everyone in the world can type in special characters, so if someone creates a user name of, , how is anyone supposed to interact with that user What name should you use when referring to them What is an admin supposed to do when he wants to look them up in a database What buttons does he press to get that nameExample UBBDev User 14752 Not all special characters are supported in all browsers I believe that the above example exists in Emoji version 8, or even Emoji version 9. If your internet client mail reader, web browsers, RSS feed client, etc. doesn't support that version, then you're stuck not seeing anything at all.Emoji version 9 was released in June 2016 and some keyboard app vendors were incorporating preliminary specs before the release date. In those preliminary specs, a hand gun and an Olympic Marksman Rifle were included with them since then, the hand gun has been replaced with a water gun, and the Olympic Marksman Rifle has been removed completely. You probably may face some issues if you had created a user name with those Emoji. A possible additional entry If the forum's database schema doesn't support these extended characters, or gets updated to a different schema, those users with special characters in their Login Name may have just lost access to their accounts. Or all usage of those special chars has been lost. A backuprestore of the database between servers, could trigger issues.

What Is Covered Summary Example Files Example Language File Example Script File Example Template FileSummaryCreating a new system page in UBB.threads can be a challenge, even to a vested veteran but examples are everywhere within the system once you know how to utilize it.Initially, there was a set of sample files supplied with the UBB.threads stock archive, but a previous developer had removed the file to save very little space. This article was initially inspired by those sample files. Each system in UBB.threads has at least three parts The Language file languagesenglishexample.php The language file, containing all of the strings that your new page will be using. The Script file scriptsexample.inc.php The script file, containing all of the PHP that your script will be utilizing. The Template File templatesdefaultexample.tpl The template file, which contains the overall outline of how your script is presented.Likewise, each Admin system has three parts The Language file languagesenglishadminexample.php The admin language file, containing all of the strings that your new page will be using. The Script file adminexample.inc.php The admin script file, containing all of the PHP that your script will be utilizing. The Template File templatesdefaultadminexample.tmpl The admin template file, which contains the overall outline of how your script is presented.Additionally, one can opt to utilize the Extra CSS section of the style editor to add any additional styling options that your new page will need.If you're accessing a page, the templatescriptlanguage file is commonly listed in your address bar, such asActive Topics ubbthreads.phpactivetopics71.htmlExample FilesWe generally recommend that you learn how the system itself works by looking at the various files included with your install, but getting started can be a caveat we've produced the below Sample Files so that you know how to get started. What Is Covered Summary ImageMagick vs GD Adjusting Gallery Settings ImageMagick Settings Gallery Forum Settings Creating a Gallery Forum Creating a New Gallery PostSummaryThe Gallery Forums feature of UBB.threads is a good option to allow your users to upload files to your server, especially since you can control the compression and allowed sizes of said images via the Control Panel.A standard forum cannot be converted into a Gallery Forum, and a Gallery Forum cannot be converted into a standard forum.ImageMagick vs GDThe UBB.threads Gallery Forums feature can be configured to utilize either GD which comes packaged with PHP, or ImageMagick which must be configured by your webhost, but will process images at a far higher quality. We will always recommend ImageMagick, however, you may have to contact your host to inquire about the location of the Convert and Mogrify commands on the server.Adjusting Gallery SettingsImageMagick SettingsThe settings for ImageMagick the full file system paths to both the convert and mogrify commands, can be found in the UBB.threads Control Panel atCP Master Settings DB, Paths, URLs, Paths URLs tab ImageMagick SettingsGallery SettingsThe Gallery Settings page can be found in the Control Panel at CP Master Settings Gallery SettingsOptions in Gallery SettingsWhat Graphics Library do you want to use Either GD or ImageMagick, note that the paths to the ImageMagick binaries on the server must be supplied before the option to utilize it will be displayed.Max HeightWidthThumbnail image max widthheight in pixels.Medium image max widthheight in pixels.Full image max widthheight in pixels. If either the width or height exceed the maximum value then the larger sized property will be scaled to this, with the other being proportionally scaled.Image QualityThumbnail Image QualityMedium Image QualityFull Image QualityHigher settings will lead to better quality, but larger filesizes. In v7.5.x you will be able to enter a quality value as text, in v7.6.0 this behavior has changed and a dropdown selection box is present.Creating a Gallery ForumCreating a Gallery Forum is exactly the same as creating a standard forum, with the exception of selecting the Gallery Forum checkbox upon creation. This checkbox is only visible during the initial creation of a Gallery Forum, so be sure to select it. As the above note states, Gallery Forums and Standard Forums cannot be converted once they have been created, as these different forum types utilize different templates.Creating a New Gallery Post1. What Is Covered Summary Configuring a Newbies Group graduating to the Users GroupSummarySome forum owners like the ability for new users to have to reach a specific amount of posts in order to have access to additional site resources. For example, new users would have to have 25 posts in order to send Private Messages. This is relatively simple to do with the groups system since out of all of the groups that a user belongs to, the higher the value, the more resources they're allowed. An example being, if the user belongs to the groups Newbies and Users, and the Newbies group has 0 allowed Private Messages Site Permission, Total of Private Topics Allowed, and the Users group has 50, the permissions of the Users group would override the Newbies permissions.Configuring a Newbies Group graduating to the Users GroupFirst, make a new group, make a Newbies groupCP Permissions Groups Add New Group tab at the bottom of the pageThen set the new group permissions to have the lowest values you'd be comfortable withForum Permissions CP Permissions ForumSite Permissions CP Permissions SiteYour users group at this point should have more resources than the newbies group or simply enabled options versus 0 for the permissions of the newbies group, otherwise, reconfigure your Users group now. Then set the new group that users join when they sign up to the new group and remove the users groupCP Membership Registration Settings Default Groups for New MembersThen you'll want to configure the users group to be a postcount group so when users hit X amount of new posts they'll be automatically placed in the Users groupCP Permissions Groups Posts

By Isaac DeCoursey and James CorthellWhat Is Covered Summary Converting Caveats Wikipedia ExplainsSummaryThe current default internet standard for character sets are UTF8 when UBB.threads was initially written, the database was configured to use an ISO character set. UTF8 is what Google uses and it's what they index, any multibyte characters will be ignored by Google, and they will additionally not show up in a search through Google.Your MySQL Collation and HTML Character Sets can both have different options the default fresh install of UBB.threads will start with a UFT8 character set. If you've started your site with a nonUTF8 character setcollation, then by all means, stay with that character set.ConvertingIf you're wanting to convert your forum and database to be UTF8, and your user base is primarily comprised of English speakers, you may end up with a few black diamonds see our Converting to UTF8 guide that you'll need to correct. We would suggest that if your forum language is English that you convert to UTF8, if your forum is NOT English then we'd recommend that you stick with the ISO character set which you where initially running.CaveatsIf you use a UTF8 Character Set and you import from a non UTF8 RSS Feed, or you copypaste from Microsoft Word or a nonEnglish language, you might see black diamonds, this is completely normal, and is because of multibyte characters not being able to be stored with a UTF8 Character Set.Input from a MAC computer, much like using Microsoft Word, will use some specialmultibyte characters such as the picture of the Apple logo which are not in the UTF8 Character Set, and will display as a Black Diamond. The best advice that we can give is If your site is currently ENGLISH ONLY and you cater to 99 ENGLISH SPEAKERS readers, update your headers to UTF8. If your site does not cater to primarily English only speakers, keep the character set you're currently using. If you are installing a freshnew site, use UTF8.Wikipedia ExplainsWikipedia explains both character sets reasonably well UTF8 vs Latin1 ISO88591.Former is a variablelength encoding, latter singlebyte fixed length encoding. Latin1 encodes just the first 256 code points of the Unicode character set, whereas UTF8 can be used to encode all code points. At physical encoding level, only codepoints 0 127 get encoded identically code points 128 255 differ by becoming 2byte sequence with UTF8 whereas they are single bytes with Latin1.

By Isaac DeCoursey Edited by James CorthellWhat Is Covered Summary Converting Your Forums Duplicating your Database in MySQL via PHPMyAdmin Converting your MySQL Database via PHPMyAdmin Converting your MySQL Tables via PHPMyAdmin Repairing your MySQL Tables via PHPMyAdmin Changing your Forum Character Set Rebuild your UBB.threads Content Testing the Conversion TroubleshootingSummaryIn 2006, I converted the MySQL database on one of my larger forum by changing the collation to utf8_general_ci UTF8 Unicode and never ran in to any problems, not even problems with passwords. Then again, I never allowed the use of extended character sets to be accepted in user names or passwords, and those forums are 100 English, even though they cater mostly to users in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, and Japan. In 2010, as part making that same forum much more SEO friendly, I updated in the language files and the header meta tags from iso88591 to utf8 Control Panel Languages Language Editor generic.php CHARSET.Converting Your ForumsBe sure to create a database backup, then be sure that backup is complete. The steps outlined here are all done manually, and backups are not created automatically. There are backup instructions included on the Migration Guide. As noted in the Migration Guide, we do not advise backups to be made via PHPMyAdmin as server settings could result in the datastream of the backup collection to be ended prematurely resulting in a file which you believe to be complete, which could in fact only contain a portion of your content.Duplicating your Database in MySQL via PHPMyAdminTo duplicate your database in PHPMyAdmin you'll want to be sure you have the correct database selected and select the Operations tab at the top of the page. In the Copy Database To field you'll enter the name that you want your backup to have such as ubbt_BAK be sure that Structure and Data, Create Database Before Copying, and Add AUTO_INCREASEMENT Value are all selected any additional fields should not be selected. When everything is configured as specified you can click the Go button to begin. If anything goes wrong with the conversion, just delete the converted database and rename your backup to reflect the active database name.Converting your MySQL Database via PHPMyAdminAfter you've backed up your database you'll want to first close your forums you don't want new content being created when you're attempting to convert the existing data. After you've created your backups, and confirmed that they are complete, go back to the Operations tab for your active database. In the Collation group, choose the utf8_general_ci collation do not change any other options, select Go when you're ready.Converting your MySQL Tables via PHPMyAdminFrom the table selection menu, displayed on the left of the page when your database is selected, go to the first table of your database ex ubbt_ADDRESS_BOOK. Now select the Operations tab at the top of the page. In the Table Options group, choose the utf8_general_ci collation do not change any other options, select Go when you are ready. Repeat this step for all of the tables in your UBB.threads database. It took me about 10 minutes to complete the conversion of all of the tables in my UBB.threads database.Repairing your MySQL Tables via PHPMyAdminYou should now REPAIR all of the MySQL Tables that you converted this step will optimize all of the tables when they are rebuilt. First you'll select your UBB.threads database in the left navigational menu so that it displays all of the tables in the database. At the bottom of this page you'll see a Check All button on the bottom left of the page. Once all of the tables are selected, choose the Repair Table option from the dropdown listing.Changing your Forum Character SetYou'll now want to edit your forums Character Set, changing the CHARSET key from iso88591 to utf8 in the Control Panel Control Panel Languages Language Editor generic.php. Changing the CHARSET key has no affect on the data in your database, it simply tells your web browser what character set that content is expected to be displayed in, rather than leave that decision up to the browser to determine on its own.Rebuild your UBB.threads ContentNow you'll want to rebuild your UBB.threads content this is done in the Control Panel Control Panel Content Rebuilder. You'll want to rebuild all Posts, Topics, Forums, Signatures, and Private Messages.Rebuilding all forum content is probably overkill, but I did it without loosing any sleep worrying about not doing it if you are for certain that you have not introduced any extended character sets to your database, you most likely will not have any problems I have roughly 4k users that browse my forum each day, since about 2003 when there is a problem, I hear about it.Testing the ConversionNow, you should login to your forums and browse your existing content, making sure that all forums and posts are displaying properly see How to Fix Black Diamonds for examples of display issues. If all goes according to plan, no one will notice anything, and everything should look as intended. If anything goes wrong, you should have backups on hand to restore your forums to how they where before you started, so that you can try again.TroubleshootingOne issue that you or your members might come across is that some single byte characters such as Swedish , , , the temperature degree symbol, 1st2nd3rd symbols, and most notoriously, Microsoft Word's backwardssinglequote ', to name a few will look like a black diamond this has no effect on the functionality of your forums, it's simply a display issue that you may run across once in a blue moon. If this bothers you, you can opt to edit the post and change the offending character with its equivalent character such as changing the backwards single quote with a standard single quote. If you read this article and you don't understand what has been conveyed, please do NOT attempt to preform the update to your site, you should instead have a professional complete this task for you.

In this article we attempt to cover all of the bases.Users on a CDN Content Delivery Network who are attempting to install or upgrade their forums should temporarily disable or put their site in a Development or equivalent mode their CDN until the install or upgrade has fully completed, as most CDN providers insert additional coding into pages which can cause inconsistencies in the installerupgrade utility.Image ProcessingGD or ImageMagick need to be installed and functional within PHP in order to process images.MySQL Permissions The database user must have at least the following privileges SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE, ALTER, and INDEX. The database user must have the CREATE and DROP privileges during installation and upgrades.PHP Setting RecommendationsNew servers are rarely provisioned with tuned settings and the default settings are limited, which may cause issues with any sort of resource usage. The default PHP v5 settings are max_execution_time 30 max_input_time 60 memory_limit 32M post_max_size 8M upload_max_filesize 2MWe recommend that they be updated to max_execution_time 120 max_input_time 120 memory_limit 256M post_max_size 16M upload_max_filesize 6MRam and CPU RequirementsThe required Ram and CPU resources for your server will be one area that would depend on the site traffic a larger site will use more resources than a new site. Our resources for our low traffic forums 5 UBB.threads installs on server, all fairly small sites are only 4 GB Ram with a 2 GHz Quad Core CPU however, we have clients who're hosted on servers with 90 GB Ram on 6 Core Quad 2.6 GHz CPU's. The amount of resources really do depend on your site usage and traffic volume. The overall goal with memory is to keep your Swap Space LinuxUnix or Page File Windows usage as low as possible during all hours of traffic especially during your peak hours. Where the Swap Space and Page File is there to ensure your system stays online versus say crashing and not coming back they're not there to be utilized on a production server as a set of resources of their own just simply to keep your system stable. If you're having issues with slowdowns that're unbearably wrong, you should validate that you're not sending a lot of resources to swap or the page file. You should also reference the PHP Setting Recommendations above portion of this article for some helpful tips on ensuring your PHP install is optimized for your server.Web Server RequirementsUBB.threads should work with any web server Apache, IIS, lighttpd, etc that supports the PHPMySQL requirements below.
Issues with the PHP 'max_input_vars' Setting

What Is Covered Summary Frequently Asked Questions What harm could it really do What is my setting Can I change my setting Is there anything that I can do if my host has suhosin installed Is there a check for this settingSummaryThe PHP max_input_vars setting defines how many input variables are allowed to be sent to the server at once this limit is applied to the _GET, _POST, and _COOKIE superglobals. It is meant to mitigate denial of service attacks which use hash collisions. If the amount of variables exceeds the limit set by max_input_vars an E_WARNING error is issued, and further input variables are stripped from the request. What this means is that if the data being received has more requests than max_input_vars are configured to accept, it'll just drop the requests accordingly. Where the PHP description slightly rewritten to not be so sterile states that requests AFTER the variable is reached are the only things dropped, we've seen the entire request handler dropped example.Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat harm could it really doIf, for whatever reason, your web host has this variable set lower than the default value, you could see configuration variables dropped completely, or at the very worst you could experience a behavior where your UBB.threads configuration file could be cleared. What is my settingYou can check your max_input_vars setting by opening the PHP Info link in the Control Panel CP Tools Information the default is 1000 and should be fine for most sites. Can I change my settingSome hosts allow users to offset some PHP and Apache configuration settings through .htaccess and php.ini files in the user home based on whatever your AllowOverride setting is configured for in the web server's configuration. You can test this by adding the following to a .htaccess file in your web root and validating that it can be offset by looking at your phpinfo page in the UBB.threads Control Panel. The line to increase the max_input_vars setting isphp_value max_input_vars 3000There is no perfect value, and the total is completely relative to your install the more forums you have the more of a chance you'll have at reaching this limit. To figure out a value for your forums you should take the amount of forums you have X and multiply that value by 26 fields and add 4 additional fields ex X forums 26 fields 4 additional fields. The result should be the minimum value needed. Is there anything that I can do if my host has suhosin installedThe default suhosin configuration also has several defaults that you may experience issues with like the above Can I change my setting section you can also attempt to override these settings by adding the following to a .htaccess file in your web root more information can be found on the Issues with the PHP Module 'suhosin' entryphp_value max_input_vars 3000php_value suhosin.get.max_vars 3000php_value suhosin.post.max_vars 3000php_value suhosin.request.max_vars 3000Is there a check for this settingWe have written a basic check for the max_input_vars setting in v7.6.0 that will display an error if your web host has this value configured below the default value of 1000 however, for larger forums, this default value can be too low, and a good value for your site will vary based on how large your forum install is, and how many forums you are using. The warning on the landing page of the Control Panel will give you a basic recommendation based on how many forums you have. The basic recommendation is a value of 2048 hoewver, if you have a large amount of forums that set your forum into a zone above this threshold, that value will be displayed instead. The Control Panel warning is as followsYour PHP max_input_vars setting is set to a low value Current 3000 Default 1000 we'd recommend a minimum of 2048 with your current amount of forums. Your forum may have issues such as a blank configuration file, missing settings, or unexpected script behavior if you continue. Please see the Issues with the PHP 'max_input_vars' Setting entry on the UBB.Wiki for more information.

Code Modifications

In the past, it has been made clear at UBB.Central that modifications to the stock UBB.threads coding are not supported, and that only code supplied in the stock archives in the Members Area would be officially supported but we wanted to provide some more information for users. The reason that modifications to the stock code are not supported is because the coding is released as a package alterations done to the coding where not written or permitted by UBB.Central, so the can't be expected to provide support for coding they did not write or have written for UBB.threads. Before requesting official support at UBB.Central you may be asked to remove modifications that you have made to the stock files provided in the UBB.threads release that you are running. This is the whole reason that The UBB.Developers Network was created to provide and maintain modifications to UBB.Classic and UBB.threads. Where UBB.Dev may not have created the coding that you're working with, they're generally more than happy to glance over your coding for you and provide input. However, the 3rd party developers there generally don't write free code outside of published modifications, so you may find yourself looking to hire a 3rd party developer such as VNC Web Services.

Beta Testing UBB.threads

What Is Covered Summary Expectations Join the Team ResourcesSummaryFrom time to time The UBB.Developers Network UBBDev a subsidiary of VNC Web Services and the coding team behind UBB.threads v7.5.9 and the upcoming UBB.threads v7.6.x releases will bring on new Beta Testers to test new features and coding changes to the UBB.threads product.Expectations Active License Users are expected to have an active license for the UBB.threads product users with expired licenses will be removed from the beta program. Backups, Installation, and Upgrades Where it's great when users have a real world database to work with, it's most helpful when they have the ability to create backups of their live site, install a beta installation, and upgrade their live site when they're comfortable with the code changes. It's more difficult on the development team for us to both develop new coding and push changes out the beta tester sites, it's easier if users are capable of doing the installs themselves. Coding Ability We prefer, but not require, that testers have the ability to at least understand the coding provided if not the ability to write additional coding if needed. A lot of changes are contained in any Snapshot Releases and the ability to assist in debugging code is strongly welcomed. Forums You will need an active account on both the UBB.Central and UBB.Dev Forums. Providing Feedback We require that all testers have the ability to provide helpful feedback at the Official UBB.threads Development discussion forums. Clear and Consist English Language Reports Our team is comprised of English speaking individuals, we do not make any claim to speak other languages as such we require all reports to be written in complete English so that we can understand issues and post fixes. Google Translate is not enough, broken English in reports just make them harder to work on with our development schedule.Join the TeamGenerally, new Beta Testers are chosen from active users on the UBB.Central or UBB.Dev Forums who have shown the ability to be able to install and maintain their own forums as well as preform their own modifications and coding. Users must be able to read, and potentially write, new code, packages, and patches.Users may request privately to be a part of the Beta Team however, not every request will be approved.Resources Official UBB.threads Announcements A PUBLIC forum where Developer Notes and Announcements are provided. Items here are open for discussion at all times and topics are expected to be discussed publicly. Official UBB.threads Development A PRIVATE forum for development discussions. Any activity in this forum is expected to stay in this forum where we do not require testers to sign a Non Disclosure agreement, we do like to request that all development discussions stay private. There is a FAQ for general Beta Tester information at UBB.threads Beta Tester FAQ.

Release Dates

The management at UBB.Central has indicated to the developers at The UBB.Developers Network UBB.Dev that they would be open to 34 releases of the UBB.threads forum software per year. This doesn't mean that a release will be provided every 34 months, it simply means that they're open to the possibility of 34 releases in the time frame of a year. The UBB.Developers Network will never provide a concrete release date, as we've seen first hand how detrimental not making a deadline can be, especially with the UBB.threads product in the past. Another reason that we are not inclined to provide release dates is because we are not sure when our work on a version will be complete. We have an internal discussion before we start on a release and we work on those goals, once we hit a milestone we check back and see what else we'd like to include in that release. Where we may have internal milestones as to what we'd like to have accomplished by a specific date, these are in no way set in stone, and generally aren't provided outside of the beta group. The developers behind The UBB.Developers Network are working on UBB.threads as freelancers development is done in their spare time and is generally done as a hobby outside of their normal personal and professional lives. In short, a new release will be provided when it is deemed fully functional and as bug free as it can be, by the development team and beta group. It could be moments from now, or months away it'll always be a work in progress. The progression of coding, system services, and the creation and progression of web standards, ensure that nothing is ever complete simply currently working. The public is more than welcome to visit the Official UBB.Threads Announcements forum at UBB.Dev at any time to take a peek at what we're working on and get little teasers and progress reports of new features, changes, etc.

Unable to connect to the database!

What Is Covered Summary Causes TroubleshootingSummaryThis entry is to clarify on a specific error found in your UBB.threads MySQL Log File found associated with a Database Error Only Visible to Forum Administrators error.CausesGenerally the cause of being unable to connect to the MySQL database is server resource usage, you're likely hitting your resource limits either Memory or Storage space which is causing temporary issues until resources are released back to the server. You're more likely to see these resource limits being matched during off time where the server is preforming maintenance backups for example take a lot of system resources to generate, but don't generally take that long to process, so if you see these errors occurring late at night or early in the morning, it's probably the cause.TroubleshootingOn a Shared Host there is ultimately nothing you can do short of asking your web host to investigate why the MySQL database crashes it'd be helpful to supply them with your UBB.threads MySQL Log so that they can check any downtime against their server logs.On a VPS or Dedicated Server there is quite a bit of troubleshooting that you can do How is your storage During peak hours I'd recommend that you have 500mb1gb free memory, and several gigs of free storage space. What time are these errors happening See my above comment in the Causes section above regarding server updates and backups. At some point every VPS or Dedicated server is going to run into an issue with either needing more storage space or needing additional memory allocated to your server you'd have to discuss with your web host or data center directly if you find that server resources are needing to be upgraded.

How to Fix Black Diamonds

What Is Covered Summary Additional Reading Fixes Further InformationSummaryBlack diamonds occur when posts are stored in the database with one character set, and are read out to the browser with a different character set that doesn't support additional characters such as extended characters like those used in various languages like Spanish that aren't used in English. In UBB.Threads 7.5.9 the default character set was updated to be UTF8, whereas prior to this it was set as ISO88591.Additional ReadingIf you feel like a little reading, we recommend that you read The Absolute Minimum Every Software Developer Absolutely, Positively Must Know About Unicode and Character Sets No Excuses!.FixesTo fix this issue you can change your character set, we recommend you read the above article first, via changing your language file entry back to the old setting.1. Navigate to the Control Panel, and visit the Language Settings Control Panel Languages2. Select the Language Editor tab.3. In the Search String field, type UTF8 and press the Go button.4. Here you will see any instances of the string UTF8 in your language files, of which you'll see myfeeds.php andor generic.php Click Edit next to generic.php.5. At the top of this page you'll see the entry CHARSET highlighted in RED. Replace UTF8 with ISO88591 please be careful to not add any spaces or linefeed before or after this text.6. Scroll to the bottom of this page and click on the Update Language File button. You will likely experience more Black Diamonds after changing this setting back, this is because any new entries created with the new character set entry will be read out with the old character set, thus causing the same issue in reverse.Further InformationUntil around the end of 2005, ISO88591 was the most widely used character set that sites used for their content. In more modern times, UTF8is now utilized in the majority of internet sites. If you are starting a new forum, we would recommend that you use UTF8 as your character set. Within North America, you may never see any black diamonds except1 When viewing old content on your site AND you used tostill use ISO88591.2 When you are importing RSS feeds from anISO88591source.If you are using a UTF8 character set and your DB is also UTF8, you shouldn't see black diamonds at all.Unicode Usage Statistics as of February 2012

Issues with the PHP Module 'suhosin'

What Is Covered Summary Recommended Values Install Check DiscussionSummaryThe PHP suhosin module can wreak havock with your UBB.threads install and other scripts that you may have hosted on your site, more specifically it can clear your includesconfig.inc.php to be 0bytesblank. All variables that you can set on your install are passed along with each page submission, which on a default install of suhousin can result in an empty includesconfig.inc.php. To get around this, we recommend some very basic values to replace the defaults that ship with the default configuration for you to supply to your webhost.Recommended ValuesA minimum recommended value of 2048 will work fine for most users, but you'll have to contact your webhost to increase this limit in the php.ini for your site a reference of this can be found regarding Mediawiki.Install CheckPrior to v7.6.0 a check was unavailable in the stock packages but has been added to the initial install screens. Additionally, a check has been added to the landing page of the Control Panel, and you can install the UBB.threads System Requirements Test package, which tests your server for the default configuration.DiscussionHere I discuss the issue and a fix, in summary below is a transcript of that post.I'm pretty sure I've found the culprit, I'll type out an explanation here for you to give to your hostquoteI believe that the issue lies with the suhousin module installed on the server. By default suhousin will limit the amount of variables that php can read as a protection from buffer overflows. With our script, UBB.Threads, when the config file config.inc.php is written it will submit all configuration variables as post data which can exceed the amount of variables which suhousin can process this limit will need to either be removed or increased to alleviate the issue where the config file will write blank data which will disable the forum until a backup file can be restored.quoteAnd I'll type out a statement for the search feature so that this thread can be easily located in the futureToo many configuration variables are being submitted for the suhosin module and it's clearing out the configuration config.inc.php file.I really just want to quote Rick, who is missed dearlysuhosin strikes again. For anyone following along or comes across this in a search. suhosin is limiting the amount of form variables that can be passed to the script and discarding the rest.More information on what suhousin is, that I posted in one of the threads I'm linking to belowSuhosin is an advanced protection system for PHP installations. It was designed to protect servers and users from known and unknown flaws in PHP applications and the PHP core. Suhosin comes in two independent parts, that can be used separately or in combination. The first part is a small patch against the PHP core, that implements a few lowlevel protections against bufferoverflows or format string vulnerabilities and the second part is a powerful PHP extension that implements all the other protections.Unlike the PHP HardeningPatch Suhosin is binary compatible to normal PHP installation, which means it is compatible to 3rd party binary extension like ZendOptimizer. Here I will provide some handy dandy references so that I don't have to hit my head against the wall next timeDisplay and Feature settings gone and will not reset7.5.5 all moderator permissions gone if you try to update mod groupLosing forumsLosing forumsIn fact, you might as well just link your host to this particular posting, with this url.

Uploading the Software Files

Backup Your InstallIf you are preforming an upgrade, be sure that you backup your existing configuration files in the cache_builderscustom, styles, and includes folders if you accidentally overwrite these files there is no way to restore them without you having backed them up first.Download the SoftwareDownload the latest install archive from the UBB.Central Members Area.Extract the Software Files Extract the software archive file to your computer. If you are performing an upgrade you will want to remove the cache_builderscustom and includes folders, and the styleswrappers.php file.Connect to the Server Create Installation FolderThis is the folder within your web root from which your UBB.thread installation files will run. Note that when choosing the placement of this folder on your web server, you are also determining the URL. We recommend using forum or forums.Transfer Files to ServerThis can be done via FTP, SCP, SFTP, other remote connection method or directly from the machine itself if you have such access. Move all of the folders and files extracted from the software archive the zip file downloaded from UBB.Central to the installation folder you created on your server. Change the transfer mode on your FTP program to upload in text or ASCII. Upload all of the files and folders from the extracted software files into the installation folder except for the images folder and its contents. Change the transfer mode on your FTP client to Binary and upload the images folder and its contents. You may not see a Binary mode option in your FTP program you may just have a menu option to check and uncheck ASCII. To upload in Binary, uncheck ASCII. If you are uploading files via FTP, you may wish to upload scripts in ASCII text mode and images in Binary mode. While uploading in this fashion is not required, it can be helpful for troubleshooting, should you encounter problems in the future. Most modern 2010 FTP clients such as FileZilla should be able to auto sense the type needed to upload all of the files.Set File Folder PermissionsYou must set the following permissions on the UBB.threads files and folders, you can use your FTP software to set these permissions. For exact information on setting permissions in your FTP client, see the documentation included with that program.Linux, Unix, and Mac Servers admin folder set permissions to 777 files within the admin folder set permissions to 666 cache folder set permissions to 777 cache_builders folder set permissions to 777 cache_builderscustom folder set permissions to 777 Required to edit Custom Islands files within the cache_builderscustom folder set permissions to 666 Required to edit Custom Islands gallery folder set permissions to 777 Required to use the Gallery feature folders within the gallerydefault folder set permissions to 777 Required to use the Gallery feature includes folder set permissions to 777 files within the includes folder set permissions to 666 languages folder set permissions to 777 languagesenglish folder set permissions to 777 files within the languagesenglish folder set permissions to 666 languagesenglishadmin folder set permissions to 777 files within the languagesenglishadmin folder set permissions to 666 sessions folder set permissions to 777 styles folder set permissions to 777 Required to use the Style Editor files within the styles folder set permissions to 666 Required to use the Style Editor templatescompile folder set permissions to 777 templatesdefault folder set permissions to 777 Required to use the Template Editor files within the templatesdefault folder set permissions to 666 Required to use the Template Editor tmp folder set permissions to 777 uploads folder set permissions to 777Some servers suPHP with a allow_file_others_writeable value of disabled Your error log will have notations of is writeable by others will not allow scripts to be executed out of a folder that is has 777 permissions such as the dashboard.php file in the admin folder if this is true on your server, your base UBB.threads folder the one holding all of your UBB.threads files and the admin folder should be chmodded 775 or 755 with the files in the admin folder chmodded 644.Where it generally isn't used by most forums, you can manage images in the control panel if you chmod the files and folders within the images folder appropriately 777 for folders, 666 for files.Windows ServersBecause permissions must be set on the machine itself, and cannot be set remotely via your FTP client, you will need to have access to the machine to set these permissions. Before beginning the installation, you will need the following information A copy of the UBB.threads software archive file, downloaded from the UBB.threads Member Area. Archival software such as WinZip, WinRar, or Stuffit Expander available free for Macintosh, Windows, Linux and Solaris platforms. Please note that more modern versions of Windows come with the ability to manage .zip archives from the rightclick context menu. Access to your server, either at the machine directly, or via a remote connection method such as FTP, SFTP, SCP. A modern web browser such as Firefox, Chrome, or Microsoft Edge. Your server must fully support UBB.threads we have a listing of System Requirements and Suggestions and a System Requirements Test Script available.UBB.threads does not create the actual database, nor does it create the user and password for your database it will only create the tables in the database specified by you in the installation utility.Prior to the installation of UBB.threads please create the database, username, and password via your web host you will need this info to complete the installation of UBB.threads.

SummaryContent Management is an essential part of a successful community. Moving topics to proper forums, archiving and pruning can all help to keep your forums in tiptop shape. These tools have been provided to help you manage the content of your message board community.RSS FeedsRSS Feeds allow you to syndicate content from your UBB message board, which allows users to access your syndicated content quickly and easily. RSS feeds can be created to display topics and posts of a single forum or multiple forums. To learn more about RSS itself, check out Wikipedia RSS.Single Forum RSS TabSingle Forum RSS feeds can be created in the Forum Settings section, under the Details option for each forum, but you can see an overview of your current singleforum RSS feeds here. To create or modify any RSS feed, locate the appropriate forum and click Edit. This will take you to the RSS Tab for the forum settings section of this forum. Here, you can edit the settings of the RSS feed. Configure the various settings to your liking and then click Submit Changes. To subscribe to the RSS feed, users will need to view the forum, click the Forum Options button, and then choose the name of the RSS feed. This will allow them to keep up on new content from your site with their favorite RSS reader. The content within RSS feeds will be available to anyone with the URL to the feed, so we do not recommend creating an RSS feed that queries content from a private forum.Multi Forum RSS TabMy FeedsApprove PostsWhen a forum has been configured to use Post Moderation, administrative approval will be required before content goes live. To enable moderation in a forum, navigate in your control panel to Forums Forum Settings and click the Details link for the forum you wish to edit. On the Forum Permissions tab, check the Enable Full Post Moderation option. When content is awaiting approval, it will not display in the forum unless you have administrative or moderator rights. Pending content can be approved in the Approve Posts area of your control panel. Select the appropriate action for each item, and click the Submit button.Move TopicsTopics can be moved from one forum to another to allow for better organization. Using the Move Topics function, you can search for content that meets certain criteria, and then move it to a different forum. You can create a selection list of topics from one, many, or all forums, searching by date or by user number. If you include a user number, only topics started by this user will be returned. Note that the date range entered refers to the date of the last post in a thread. To move the results of the search automatically to the new forum, uncheck the Manually select topics box. Otherwise, UBB will return a selection list from which you can choose the topics to move.Prune TopicsIt's a good idea to prune away older or unnecessary content for performance reasons. Using the Prune Topics function, you can search for content that meets certain criteria, and then delete it from your forums. You can create a selection list of topics from one, many, or all forums, searching by date or by user number. If you include a user number, only topics started by this user will be returned. Note that the date range entered refers to the date of the last post in a thread. To prune the results of the search automatically, uncheck the Manually select topics box. Otherwise, UBB will return a selection list from which you can choose the topics to delete.

Configuring the Software Files

SummaryHere we'll cover the steps of the installation script.Users on a CDN Content Delivery Network who are attempting to install or upgrade their forums should temporarily disable or put their site in a Development or equivelant mode their CDN until the install or upgrade has fully completed, as most CDN providers insert additional coding into pages which can cause inconsistencies in the installerupgrade utility.Run Installation Script Browse to the install.php script found in your install directory. If you've uploaded the files to a directory called forums, the URL to the install.php script in your install directory would look like thishttpwww.example.comforumsinstallinstall.phpCheck Permissions In this step, the application checks the set permissions. If you've properly set the permissions as outlined above, each of the checks conducted by the installation script will result in a green PASSED message. If any of the directories or files do not have the proper permissions or do not exist, the installation will note this with a red FAILED message. If you receive the FAILED message, reset the permissions of that item and click the Try Again button. Once each of the checks results in the PASSED message, you can click the Proceed to Next Step button. You should not proceed to the next step until each of the filesdirectories listed result in the PASSED message. Enter Database Information In order for the UBBtrade software to properly store your data, it must have access to your MySQL database. Entering your database information into this form allows the UBBtrade installation script to build the necessary database tables and stores the database information in the configuration files so that the application can write new data posts, registrations, etc to the database. Enter your Database Server Name, Database Name, Database User and Database Password into the appropriate fields. If you do not have this information, you will need to contact your host or MySQL documentation. Verify that the information you've entered is correct and click Check Database Settings. If the installation script tells you that connecting to the database with the information provided has FAILED, use the Verify Settings button to return to the form. Check your settings, contacting your host if necessary, and try again. If the installation script tells you that connecting to the database with the information provided has PASSED you may then click the Next Step button to proceed. By default, the Tablename Prefix used is ubbt_. This prefix will precede the name of every table created by the UBBtrade installation script. If you wish to use another prefix, change this value.Enter Paths and URLs If PHP has been properly configured to provide this information, UBB will automatically detect the correct path URL settings for this step, but please verify before continuing. Verify that the field for The Domain UBB will be run on is correct. It should look like httpwww.example.com Verify that the field for Base URL to the UBB Install is correct. This should be the path to the installation relative to the URL. It should look like forums Verify that the field for Path to Your UBB Install is correct. It might look like homeexamplepublic_htmlforums If you are running multiple installations of the UBB software on this domain, you can also choose to use a custom cookie prefix to avoid cookie problems. If you wish to do this, enter a prefix into the Custom Cookie Prefix field here. If the installation script tells you that the information provided has FAILED, use the Verify Settings button to return to the form. Check your settings, contacting your host if necessary, and try again. If the installation script tells you the information provided has PASSED you may then click the Next Step button to proceed. There should be no slash trailing the domain or directory names.Create the Admin User If you are importing another forum into this installation then you may skip this step. You will use your old Administrator username and password. The user you create during this step will be the primary administrator of the board. Enter the preferred Username the name used for logging in, Display Name the name displayed with your posts on the community, Email Address and Password into the corresponding fields and click Submit Admin User Info. Create the Database Tables Once you have created your admin user, the installation procedure will take you through the automatic building of the database tables. Delete the Install Files Delete the install directory from the server. Note you should not continue until you have deleted this directory. Leaving these files on the server could cause problems at a later time.

Moderation Guide

SummaryThis guide gives an overview of various functions for a Moderator or Global Moderator. The primary distinction between the two is that, where a Moderator is the mod of a forum, a Global Moderator is a mod of all forums. Where both groups can be granted Control Panel access, it's recommended to only provide elevated privileges a Global Moderator as it's more of a Junior Administrator position.Topic OptionsInline ModerationThe Inline Moderation dropdown, as well as it's associated check boxes appear when viewing a forum when you have Moderator status and allows you to mass edit the threads in the forum. To use it, simply check the check boxes to the right of the thread listing on those threads in which you wish to moderate and select the option in the Inline Moderation dropdown below. The options are Approve Topics Approve threads to be viewed and replied only in forums when approval is needed. StickUnstick Topics Pinunpin these threads at the top of the forum. Close Topics Lock these threads so no one can reply to it. Open Topics Open these threads so people can continue to reply to it. Delete Topics Purge these threads from your forums. MoveMerge Topics Relocate these threads to a different forum.Thread OptionsManage TopicThe Manage Topic bar appears when viewing a thread when you have Moderator status of the forum that the thread resides in. From here you can preform the following tasks MoveMerge this topic Relocate this thread to a different forum. Delete this topic Purge this thread from your forums. Make this topic sticky or Unstick this topic once stickied Pinunpin this thread at the top of the forum. Lock this topic Lock this thread so no one can reply to it. Rename this topic Rename all of the responses in this thread to that of the initial posting.Maintenance ScreensEdit ScreenEach posting in a thread in the forum you moderate will have an Edit option at the bottom right of the post, this will allow you to moderate your users posts. This option will simply open the post in a Full Text Editor for you to edit.MoveMerge ScreenYou can split a posting into a separate thread by editing the post see the above section Edit Screen and selecting the MoveMerge this post and any replies button at the bottom of the edit screen. From here you'll have several options Move post and replies to This will allow you to move the post and its replies to a forum thus creating a new topic. Merge post and replies to post This will allow you to move the post and its replies to be attached to another posting you'll need the posting id from the posting which you wish to attach the posts to. Reason for Moving It's generally good to leave a message about why posts where moved. Should a PM be sent to the topic starter Generally, when moving postings you won't need to use this option, however, if you wish the topic creator to be notified of your actions, select this checkbox.Delete ScreenSticky ScreenLock ScreenRename ScreenControl Panel Options

What Is Covered Summary Manual Backups Creating Manual Backups The UBB.threads Backup Utility Using the UBB.threads Backup Utility Creating a File Backup Using tar to Create a Backup of FilesSummaryCreating regular backups of your forum, or site, is a very important item to followup on many users assume I installed the software and it is working, so I am good to go, but what about when something happens when upgrading the software, or moving your site to another host, or just a random server hiccup that results in issues that can't be resolved without a backup to at least restore the site to the previous state Another item to consider is when your web host makes some changes that result in a corrupted file or a database, the result is your forum becoming unusable. The best suggestion is to create regular backups of the forum database as well as the files located in your forum directory, in case of catastrophic failure, or operator error. Going about making a backup and using it to restore your site can be complicated depending on what method you use. For new users, it's not just making a FTP backup of your site, but also to backup the MYSQL Database tables where your forum data is stored. The UBB.threads Backup Utility does not make backups of your forum files, which may have been modified, which means that there generally aren't backups of your config.inc.php file. The configuration file contains all the settings and important info that make your forum operate. Making a full backup of your forum, or entire site, requires creating a backup of your site files and a backup of your MySQL Database. Most web hosts do in fact make regular backups of their servers, and perhaps your web space, but they are just to restore the server and your account not necessarily just your data. If they do create backups, they can charge a additional fee to restore your files, then the issue becomes how old is the backup. Our parent organization VNC Web Services offers Migration and Backup Services so that you can minimize any possible downtime.Manual BackupsA Manual Backup is the recommendation, as you're creating a backup directly on the server and can observe any errors. The caveat would be that some hosts do not supply access to SSH to manage your site which is required to utilize the mysqldump and tar utilities on the server.Creating Manual BackupsCreating a Database BackupDatabase backups are created via SSH a secure utility for accessing the server via a Command Line Interface using the mysqldump command, your query would be something similar tomysqldump uusername ppassword my_database_name my_database_name.sqlSo, if your username is gizmo, your password is awesomesauce, your database name was myawesomewebsite, and you wanted the file created wherever you're currently at on the server, your command would bemysqldump ugizmo pawesomesauce myawesomewebsite myawesomewebsite.sqlYou can also use the tar command to compress your MySQL backup, the command would be similar totar cvpzf my_ubb_database.tgz my_database_name.sqlThe UBB.threads Backup UtilityUBB.threads v7.x comes with a backup utility to create a simple backup of your MySQL database. A caveat here, however, is that larger databases over say 50MB could hit the PHP Max Execution time limit, leaving you with what seems like a solid backup of your database, but is really just the data it could pull together before the time limit is reached. We would in EVERY case advise that you make a Manual Backup as there is no PHP limit as the backup is created with direct output from the MySQL server via a SSH connection. The UBB.threads Backup Utility will only backup your MySQL Database and will not archive your forum files, attachments, uploads, avatars, etc. Restoring files from the UBB.threads Backup utility require that you restore each table individually, versus a single backup file that the Manual Backup will offer with 60 tables, restoring from backup with the UBB.threads Backup Utility would take a substantial amount of time.Using the UBB.threads Backup UtilityTo get started go toControl Panel Database ToolsSelect the Backup Tables tab and the first option to select isBackup Storage DirectoryYou'll want to create a new folder to house your backups, we would recommend that this directory not be accessible from the web as anyone with the name of the target directory would be able to access your generated backups generally you would create this folder via FTP or SSH, you should chmod this folder 777.If your web root is homeexamplepublic_html we would recommend your UBB.threads backup directory to be homeexampleubbbackupsThe path you enter is a absolute path, from the server root you can find the path to your web space via the UBB.threads System Requirements Test or via the PHP Info section of the UBB.threads Control Panel. After populating the backup storage folder, the next step would be to click on the Click to test directory link this will write a small file to the folder specified to test if it can be written to. This is an important step, so please take care to not skip it.The next option is Add a Drop Table Statement, this adds an option to your backups to replace existing tables you should always select this option so that you can restore the tables when you go to restore the backup, otherwise you'll have to empty the tables before attempting to restore the data.Next you can select if you'd like to backup individual tables, or all of them we suggest that you back up all of the tables. Now you'll want to select the submit button to begin the backup process. Do not press stop, or close your browser, during the backup creation it will take quite a bit of time to generate MySQL backups, depending on how large your forum is. When the process has completed, remember that your files are backed up in the storage directory that you previously specified, and that you'll need to download them to your local device to keep an off site backup.Creating a File BackupBacking up your site files is generally a simple task you can opt to use tar via SSH see syntax below in the Using tar to Create a Backup of Files section below or you can use an FTP utility, such as Filezilla, or a utility supplied by your host such as CPanel, UserMin, etc.. You will need to backup all of your UBB.threads files and folders.Using tar to Create a Backup of FilesBackups of your file system would be created using the command tar, which is an archival utility. The command issued would betar cvpzf my_ubb_backup.tgz pathtothreads

Migration Guide

SummaryThis guide is designed to help you migrate your forums from one webhost to another it assumes you have some basic knowledge of linuxwindows servers, and are capable of administering them.If you are not comfortable with preforming a migration by yourself, our parent organization VNC Web Services offers Migration and Backup Services so that you can minimize any possible downtime. It is highly recommended that you first run the UBB.threads System Requirements Test on your new server prior to moving your files, as it will alert you to any potential configuration issues such as the suhousin security module that can overwrite your configuration file with a 0 byte file, thus completely removing any settings on your UBB.threads install.Backup Current FilesFirst we need to backup your current files, this is simple with the tar command in LinuxUnixBSD via SSH Secure Shell to the Command Line Interface astar cvpzf my_ubb_backup.tgz pathtothreadsAdditionally, if you're on a windows machine you can zip the directory or use any other archival tools available on the machine if you don't have any you could download them file by file via FTP but it will take quite a while.Backup DatabaseNow you'll want to backup your database, you can do this from free tools like PHPMyAdmin, however, web based tools like PHPMyAdmin or the UBB.threads Backup Tool could hit the PHP Max Execution time limit and present you with an incomplete database backup. We recommend that you only backup your database via the Command Line Interface via a SSH Secure Shell to the Command Line Interface to a LinuxUnixBSD asmysqldump uusername ppassword my_database_name my_database_name.sqlYou can optionally use the hhostname and Pport trigger should you be communicating with a nonlocal SQL server please note that most servers do not allow nonlocal access. You can also compress the generated database backup via the tar command in SSHtar cvpzf my_ubb_database.tgz my_database_name.sqlAlternatively, if you're on another OS or cannot use Linux command line tools, you can use web utilities like PHPMyAdmin to download an archive of your sql data. Please note that on large forums this is not recommended, and it is always recommended to use the compression options within PHPMyAdmin itself targlobalzip are recommended. The LinuxCommand Line versions will take MUCH less time to importexport, as you're not going through a php script which uses the web server you're accessing the SQL server directly.Transfer FilesNow you'll want to transfer your backups to your new server. You'd do this either by downloading the database and forum backups to your hard disk, and uploading them to the new server OR you can place them both in a webaccessible directory on your old server, and use the wget command in LinuxUnixBSD to download them, exwget httpwww.yousite.tldfilesmy_ubb_database.tgzwget httpwww.yoursite.tldfilesmy_ubb_backup.tgzFrom here you'll need to decide how you'll put the old files on the new server. If the new server is a Linux machine and you can access it via SSH and have access to tar and mysql command line this is a simple process. If your new server is windows based you'll want to be sure it has compression tools if you wish to place a compressed archive that you likely created in steps 1 and 2 on it.You'll want to decompress the files on the new server in LinuxUnixBSD with tar you'd dotar xzvf my_ubb_backup.tgztar xzvf my_ubb_database.tgzOnce tar has extracted the files, you'll want to change to the appropriate directories within the extracted files, and use the mv command to move the forum files to their proper new location, example by not using a starting slash you tell the command to go from where you are now vs the physical path on the servercd thedirectoriesthatwherecreatedwhenyoumadeyourbackupmv forum thenewlocationofyourforumNow that the files are now on the new server, you need to update your permissions of files and directories, they may or may not have been carried over via your backup if you used tar, so you'll want to make sure that your files are chmodded 666 and your directories 777.Import DatabaseNow that the old files are on the new server, you need to import your database you can again use PHPMyAdmin or use the command line to import the database. The command line way of doing this note, this is not the MySQL command line, simply the Linux command line would bemysql h localhost uuser ppass database_name databasebackupfile.sqlYou can optionally use the hhostname and Pport trigger should you be communicating with a nonlocal SQL server please note that most servers do not allow nonlocal access. The LinuxCommand Line versions will take MUCH less time to importexport, as you're not going through a php script which uses the web server you're accessing the SQL server directly.Updating your Configuration FileAfter checking your permissions, you'll want to update your includesconfig.inc.php file, updating the paths and urls if they're different for the new server. At the time I'm writing this article, these lines are'FULL_URL' '','BASE_URL' '','FULL_PATH' '','SESSION_PATH' '','REFERERS' '','ATTACHMENTS_PATH' '','ATTACHMENTS_URL' '',You'll also want to update the MySQL connect information in your includesconfig.inc.php file'DATABASE_SERVER' 'localhost','DATABASE_USER' 'username','DATABASE_PASSWORD' 'password','DATABASE_NAME' 'databasename','TABLE_PREFIX' 'table_prefix','HOMEPAGE_URL' 'httpwww.example.com',Move CompleteFrom here, you should be completely moved over, it may sound quite difficult at first, but it's really not. Time can vary based on the size of your database, and some sites will be larger than others. Some overzealous system administrators at some web hosts do not allow users to utilize the Command Line Interface CLI, even though SSH which is a basic method of managing your site. If your web host does not allow access to your server's CLI, you might look for a host that allows you standard access to your web space we have a list of Recommended Hosts available.

What Is Covered Summary Upgrading within UBB.threads v7 Upgrade Notes for v7.5.9 Upgrade Notes for v7.6.2 Upgrading from UBB.Classic 6.7.x UBB.Classic Import UBB.Classic Reusing Your Old Location UBB.Classic Redirecting to The New Software Upgrading from UBB.Threads v6.5.x UBB.Threads Import UBB.threads Reusing Your Old Location UBB.threads Redirecting to The New SoftwareSummaryThe goal of this guide is to aid you in upgrading UBB.threads it will cover upgrading from UBB.Classic 6.7.x, UBB.Threads v6.5.x, and from within UBB.threads v7.Our parent organization VNC Web Services offers Installation and Maintenance Services so that you can minimize any possible downtime. Please be sure to create a backup of your database and files before upgrading your installation the upgrade should happen without a hitch, however, it's better to be safe than sorry. Please be sure to delete the install directory from your forum directory after your installation as you don't need other people trying to run it as a fresh install. You should do this after any fresh install or upgrade.WARNING When upgrading from another software package, an older package such as series 6 of UBB.Threads or UBB.Classic you may have to import to v7.2 then to the latest build as the importers where designed with the UBB.threads v7.2 database schema in place and have not been upgraded since they where created. We utilize UBB.threads v7.2.2 as an intermediate step towards upgrading to the latest UBB.threads build from v6 of UBB.Threads 6.5.5 or UBB.Classic 6.7.3 this is because of the Global Moderator permission being introduced in v7.3.Some people have had luck with a refreshed importer and UBB.threads v7.5.6 as a stopgap towards v7.7.x, however you will end up with a problem with your groups ie users will be imported with their current group permission Permission groups in v7.2 were 1Admin, 2Mod, 3User wheras in v7.3 they are 1Admin, 2GlobalModerator, 3Moderator, 4User you will end up with users in the wrong groups.Upgrading within UBB.threads v7 Download the latest build from the members area. Extract the archive to your hard disk or to the server with any available utilities. Upload or move all files EXCEPT for the cache_builderscustom, includes and styles directories. You should upload the latest stylesadmin.css and stylescommon.css files with every release. Ensure chmods. All directories should be 777. All files should be 666.Some overzealous settings on some servers namely the use of the suPHP module may not execute scripts such as ubbthreads.php or the admin scripts for directories that're chmodded 777 to fix this behavior please set the permissions on the directory that is holding your UBB.threads install to 755 you may also need to chmod the admin folder to 755 as well. After uploading or moving all directories, and ensuring all chmods are correct, run the installindex.php script and start the upgrade procedure. After you've gone through the upgrade procedure, be sure to REMOVE the install and importers directories.Upgrade Notes for v7.5.9 January 27th, 2015In v7.5.9, in preparation for v7.6.0, we started to set in motion industry standards for content because of this we changed the default character set that ships with the install archive to UTF8 instead of ISO88591. What this means for existing installs is that you'll need to change the character set in the languagesenglishgeneric.php file for an upgrade UNLESS your database has been converted to UTF8 OR you have a forum that uses standard Latin characters with no extended characters English extended characters include special characters used various languages that are outside of the standard English, such as the Ultimat character. At this time, a converter has not been worked on.Upgrade Notes for v7.6.2 September 18th, 2018In v7.6.2 the installindex.php file has been updated to provide system statistics prior to the upgrade this will help insure that you're installing the correct version to your system as opposed to just trusting the files in the install folder are up to date this will look similar toWelcome to the UpgradeInstall Utility for UBB.threadsUpgrade UBB.threads from a previous versionVersion checks Database structure version 7.6.2 Script version from database 7.6.2 Script version from filesystem 7.6.2Continuing will perform the following tasks Upgrade your current version of UBB.threads to UBB.threads 7.6.2. Retain your current forum threads, posts, users and other information.Upgrading from UBB.Classic 6.7.xThe importers to UBB.threads require that you run the latest build of your originating product in this case, UBB.Classic 6.7.x.UBB.Classic Import Download UBB.threads 7.2.x full install file AND the UBB.Classic 6.7.x Importer from the UBB.Central Member Area and extract them to your hard disk. Install UBB.threads 7.2.x in a NEW directory UBB.threads is a completely different product than UBB.Classic 6.7, thus, it is not a simple update new files and run through the control panel upgrade and place the classic_import.php file from the UBB.Classic 6.7.x Importer archive in the importers folder. Go through the new install procedure visit example.comforuminstallinstall.php until you reach the create admin user screen then click on the create tables link do NOT click on the create admin user link. Run the UBB.Classic 6.7.x to UBB.threads 7 importer. visit example.comforumimportersclassic_import.php and follow the directions on screen. Import Complete. Upgrade your UBB.threads 7.2.x install to the latest available build 7.7.x.UBB.Classic Reusing Your Old LocationAs UBB.Classic is a perl script, and UBB.threads is a PHP script, you cannot run UBB.threads from the CGIbin on most hosts anyway. You can however run it from the NonCGI directory, which will be covered below. If you want to reuse your old directory, simply delete or rename your old forum NonCGI directory, and then rename the directory which houses UBB.threads any updates to paths will need to be made to the UBB.threads v7 includesconfig.inc.php file.UBB.Classic Redirecting to The New SoftwareIf you would like to redirect all requests from UBB.Classic to your new UBB.threads install, do the following Open the redirector files which came with the importer and edit the line that points to your install directory and set the url accordingly. Upload the files to your OLD install directory. You will want a 301 Permanent redirect, versus a 302 Temporary redirect. It should be perfectly safe to upload these files into your UBB.threads install directory if you opted to use the old install directory in section 2 as UBB.threads does not use these file names.Upgrading from UBB.threads 6.5.xThe importers for UBB.threads v7 require that you run the latest build of your originating product in this case, UBB.threads 6.5.x.UBB.threads ImportThe proper upgrade route is as follows Download UBB.threads v7.2.x full install archive AND the UBB.Threads 6.5.x importer from the UBB.Central Member Area and extract them to your hard disk. Install UBB.threads v7.2.x in a NEW directory UBB.threads v7 is a completely different product than UBB.Threads v6.x, thus, it is not a simple update new files and run installindex.php upgrade. Go through the new install procedure visit example.comforuminstallindex.php until you reach the create admin user screen then click on the create tables link do NOT click on the create admin user link. Run the UBB.Threads v6.5 to UBB.threads v7 importer. visit example.comforumimportersthreads_import.php and follow the directions on screen. Import Complete. Upgrade your UBB.threads 7.2.x install to the latest available build 7.7.x.UBB.threads Reusing Your Old LocationIf you want to reuse your old directory, simply delete or rename your old forum directory, and then rename the directory which houses UBB.threads v7 any updates to paths will need to be made to the UBB.threads v7 includesconfig.inc.php.UBB.threads Redirecting to The New SoftwareNow, if you want to redirect all requests from the old directory, do the following Open the redirector files which came with the importer and edit the line that points to your install directory and set the url accordingly.

SummaryThis is a list of Search Engine Spider UserAgent Strings that has been compiled by myself and several other users at UBB.central. This is by far not a complete list of spiders that would be most impossible to accomplish. Instead, this is a list of popular spiders that we have come across over several communities.UpdatesI will be updating this list from time to time so please check back often. I'll be sure to put the date of the latest update under the list.To provide updates to this list, please comment on this thread.Adding to Your ForumsThe Spider Listing can be added to your forums by going toControl Panel Display Options General Primary Who's Online Search Engine AgentsUser AgentsLast Updated 2013.11.2480legs008A6IndexerA6IndexerAccelovationheritrixAhrefsAhrefsBotAlexaia_archiverAllTheWebcrawlerfastAllTheWebFASTWebCrawlerAllTheWebFASTAltaVistaMercatorAltavistaScooterAmazon.comAMZNKAssocBotAnzwersAnzwersCrawlAsk.comAsk JeevesAsk.comteoma_agent1Ask.comTeomaAsk.comAskJeevesAtomzAtomzBabalooBabalooSpiderBaiDuSpiderBaiDuSpiderBecomeBotBecomeBotBingbingbotBingbingbot2.0BoardReaderBoardReaderBoitho.comboitho.comCityreviewCityreview RobotCrawler.deCrawlerCuilTwicelerCyberPatrolCyberPatroldel.icio.us Thumbnailsdel.icio.usthumbnailsDepSpidDepSpidDMOZRobozillaDNS MineDNSMineDontbuylistsDBLBotDotbotDotbotEntireWeb.comSpeedy SpiderExaleadExabotExciteArchitext spiderExciteArchitextSpiderFacebookfacebookexternalhitFactbitesFactbotFreeWebMonitoringFreeWebMonitoring SiteCheckerGigablastGigaBotGoogle AdsenseMediapartnersGoogleGoogle Application EngineAppEngineGoogleGoogle ImagesGooglebotImageGoogle MobileGooglebotMobileGoogle SitemapsGoogleSitemaps1.0GoogleGooglebotInfoSeekInfoSeek sidewinderInfoSeekUltraSeekInktomiSlurpKaloogaKaloogalibwwwlibwwwperlLinkDexlinkdexbotLookSmartFurlBotLooksmartMantraAgentLycosLycos_Spider_TRexMagpiemagpiecrawlerMicrosoft ResearchMSRBOTMJ12botMJ12botMSN MediamsnbotmediaMSN Photo SearchPSbotMSNmsnbotNaver.comYetiNaverBotNaverBotNetSeerTeemerNorthernLight.comGullivernoXtrumnoxtrumbotNutch BotNutch12NutchnutchsearchOmgiliomgilibotOpenAcoonopenacoonPagebullPagebullPanopta Monitoringchecks.panopta.comPanscientpanscient.comPicsearchpsbotPintrestPinterestPrivacyFinderPrivacyFinderProximicproximicScoutJetScoutJetScrubTheWebScrubbySearch HippoFluffy the SpiderSearch MeCharlotteSeznamSeznamBotShelobshelobSimilarpagesSimilarSingingFishasteriasSnapSnapbotSnapPreviewBotSnapPreviewBotSnoopySnoopySogousogou web spiderStackRamblerStackRamblerStumbleUponStumbleUpon.comTAMU.eduIRLbotTeomaTeomaAgentTinEyeTinEyeTMCrawlerTMCrawlerTwicelerTwiceler0.9VoilaVoilaVoilaVoila.frVoilaVoilaBotVoyagerVoyagerWalhelloappieWeb Data CentreWebDataCentreBotWebAltaWebAltaWebcrawler.comWebCrawlerWhois.scSurveyBotWISEnutZyBorgWorioworiobotYaCyyacybotYahoo BlogsYahooblogsv3.9Yahoo ChinaYahoo!
Private Board Closed to Guests

Some users miss the feature we had with classic, where we could have a completely private board where we don't allow guests at all to view any features. This can be accomplished with some code changes to the stock code and will work in the UBB.threads 7.x series. The first step is there is a value in the scripts called regonly to completely close the board there are two files to edit. In your forum folders under scripts you will find cfrm.inc.php and portal.inc.php.Using a text editor such as notepad search for the valueregonly 0In both of the files, change the value toregonly 1You'll want to make sure that any time you edit a file in UBB.Threads that you use something like NotePad or EditPlus. Other editors such as HTML Editors or Wordpad could add extra data to the file which will break it until they're removed.Upload the two updated files to your site via FTP.

Database Error Only Visible to Forum Administrators

What is Covered in This Article Summary I Already have MySQL Logging Enabled I never enabled MySQL Logging prior to my problem Default includesconfig.inc.php FileSummaryThis error is commonly caused by a connection issue with the MySQL database which is generally due to incorrect entries for the server name, database name or password set in the UBB.threads includesconfig.inc.php file. This issue can also be caused by errors in the tables contained in the database such as missing or corrupted tables or a corrupted UBB.threads includesconfig.inc.php file or caused by moving to a new hosting service or just a upgrade of hosting service applications by your host. The displayed message is a generic error message designed to protect your path and query information from casual viewers who happen upon the error. Unless you have enabled the Control Panel Primary Settings MySQL Logging option prior to the problem it'll be of little help. Unfortunately most users won't enable MySQL Error Logging until after they have a problem.Enable this feature early on before you have a problem. You can get around this issue on a temporary basis if you have not enabled MYSQL logging prior to having a problem and get the dreaded message Database error only visible to forum administrators by viewing the I never enabled MySQL Logging prior to my problem section below.I Already have MySQL Logging EnabledThis is the good part since you already enabled MYSQL logging. All you need to do is FTP to the folder where they are saved and view them with a plain text editor like Notepad or EditPlus.Do not edit files in nonplaintext editors, such as Microsoft Word, Libre Office, Wordpad, etc.Or if you are able to, access the UBB.threads Control Panel and view the error logs. This only works if you enabled the error logs to begin with and the Control Panel works.I never enabled MySQL Logging prior to my problemMost users end up here for some sort of resolution, but there is still hope a trigger is built into the libsmysql.inc.php file which allows the MySQL error to be shown to the browser. Once you enable this trigger you'll need to disable it once you're done as all queries that have errors will now display in plain text for all of your users to see.Fire up your FTP client such as FileZilla and edit the value in libsmysql.inc.php that says showerror 0 and change it to read showerror 1. You'll want to make sure that any time you edit a file in UBB.uhreads that you use something like Notepad or EditPlus. Other editors such as HTML Editors, Word Processors, or Wordpad could add extra data to the file which will break it until they're removed. Now, once you've uploaded the file back to the server, you can go back to the page that was spitting out an error and see what's wrong and what may need to be repaired. You should think about enabling MySQL logging in threads to save future heartache. This will also display the message to all other visitors to your site what the error and paths are. So you don't want to leave this set for a extended period of time beyond the troubleshooting stage.Default includesconfig.inc.php FileIn case you need to recreate your config file from scratch. Here is a default example to get you started it is by no means complete nor correct for your desired configuration, but it should get you up and running after a disaster. You will need to edit all the URLs, database information such as the database location, database name, database username and the database password, as well as any other initial settings that you'll want enabled.Remember to use a plain text editor such as Notepad or EditPlus that will not add formatting to the file. After you save this file and upload to your server you should go to the UBB.threads Control Panel and reviewedit and save every option even if they appear correct. So that it will force the data to be updated to the database tables andor config file. There is a separate article for those of you with a Unable to connect to the database! issue.
