The header section in general settings affects the whole board, not just the header. Basically any html inserted there gets output before the board stuff. (And the footer, after.)
Look there to see if your friend added any html, including an align=left. If not, add a
and it should center the whole thing.
Do the same in forum settings-->details-->custom header for your forums.
