I don't think making the box 'more horizontal' is doable
I think it would confuse users more to have the links out of sync with how the thread displays. It's possible the Mac doesn't support the auto-frame that shows up once the number of threads outstrip the height of the box. Which is the way it was done originally (no css'd i-frame). It would do the same on older NS browsers.
