My major use of forums in the past has been on Compuserve, with the use of Tapcis.
What that program allows us to do is to find the first post in a thread by the use of CTRL-left arrow.
Then we go back by ctrl-right arrow.
That might solve your issue, if I am reading you correctly. Just a keystroke or two and you can see what the subject is and then get back to the latest message in the thread.
