It might be a permission error. Some files/folders need special permissions. First of all identify your paths. Where the web server files need to be, so that you can see them on screen in the browser. Second check your domain name (if it's not localhost). With this information in hand try to run the threads installation.
As for your modem and linux, try some of the websites that are out there and ask for advice if your modem manufactured doesn't have a linux driver. Also DLT's (
www.dalantech.com) site has very good advice and helpful members.
