From what I understand, this is exactly what would happen because these days google ignores redirects which in the past have been abused mercilessly by those who tried to artificially increase their ratings by having numerous gateway pages.
The net result would probably be a wash at best as it would just spider the new URL contents and drop the old. Although there may be some lag time involved, probably against you because they don't seem to be spidering much new content lately.
So really, base your decision on whether you want to do this solely for the other reason you mentioned.
