hmm... ask them to click in the threads they want to get replies from? I believe they can subscribe to entire forums as well to get a daily digest of all posts in that forum, you'll need to set up a cron task for it tho. As for how 6.1 acted, I don't remember that, but it's been more than a few years since 6.1 was released
