IRC is Internet Relay Chat, it's one of the oldest and most established chat protocol's; I made the modification for UBB7 at:

By default it uses my chat server (irc.undergroundnews.com) which allows any users to have and use any channel they wish.

Additionally, it'll try to set the user nickname on the chat server as their forum name (assuming the nickname is available when they connect to the server).

The benefit of using the pJIRC addon and using an irc server is that it is free, and raidersoft is not.
