Earth tones work, they suit both sexes, and are easy on the eyes. I must admit the white page look before was easier to read and work with the mods. I agree a more corporate look would be more suitable to attract ad clients ( a site that pays for itself is always appreciated ), the black is fine, but it's not very condusive to drawing marketing types etc. There is already a strike against forums as far as most ad agencies think. They don't like sites with user defined content. This is why it really can tear a board down when flame wars etc happen.
I speak from some experience I've worked as a commercial web designer for 3+ years.
Having said that the look now is fine, although so much blue is not needed..

I wonder, over 2300 members, but I would bet less than 100 post. That is typical of all ubb's. What I'm getting at is what would it take to have 'em all here and contributing?
Perhaps a different look (I went thru more incarnations on my own site before I found what worked).
