correct but its file:/// (3 slashes) don't ask me why so if the shared drive is x the url would be:
file:///x:/path/to/file/file.ext
[edit] after testing here I see that if you use the machine name then you must use only 2 slashes, must a windows convention, so all I can say is give it a go and see it it works if you want to remove a slash in the example code just delete a /
