I use Photoshop: How I do it is to delete the unwanted background pixel by pixel with an eraser tool. If you don't have a transparent background available. Convert the image RBG: Image> Mode> RBG. Then converti it back to Indexed Color: Image> Mode> Indexed Color. You'll have the option to allow for the transparent color.
