Oh it's totally possible to do what treeloot does using an image map. That's what you're talking about.
But you better have an extreme amount of patience if you want something as complex as what they do. What an image map does is define certain areas of the image as hot, ie links. Defined by coordinates. There are various programs out there that will create the necessary code for you (note, an image map's code can be client or server side or both).. what exactly are you trying to do?

well then you're gonna be doing exactly what tree loot does.. If you notice, every single pixel on their page has a different url, and that's what you're going to want to do. Each pixel/area will have a different url. You'll need an image map program to do it.
