OK, I have very little flash knowledge here, but basically I don't want any animations etc. I just want to embed a bit of flash with a nice tune to a page. Would I be correct in thinking that Flash substantially compresses .wav files without a substantial loss in sound quality?

If I get it right, would it be possible to get a 60 second tune to download in under 10 seconds? Also, seeing as I have ver little knowledge of Flash, could someone please tell me how to do this, thanks.

Not sure what you mean, but if your using Flash 4 (like I am) then go here and it'll teach you about putting in sounds to your Flash animation..

I don't believe Flash compresses Music files... If it does, I've never seen it do it for me.

Flash 5 converts .wav files into .mp3 files.

To do what you want you would make a transparent background, and add the sound to frame 1. Then embed it into your webpage and it will be a small invisible box playing music.
