Found a bug and squashed it!

In your script, $username should be $user_name.

Please update it for other users! Thx.

When I click the link to get the hack, it says I need a username and password. Can someone please re-post this hack or send it to me privately? Thank you.

You want the ip's to stop guys who sign up just to bother people. They may have many ips or they may sign up and not say things and steal info from your forum. Now if you never see them on and they don't post. You can't catch them. This way you can nail them before they say a word if your around.

Ok...i have a question on this one for some of you who are a LOT higher up the genius tree than myself.....

I have a small program which runs on windows, which will resolve the MAC address of a person, based on their IP address (does a traceback). Now, that is a MUCH more definitive way of tracking problematic users, as IPs can be forged, whereas you have to either go to a different machine, or change your networking equipment to change MAC addresses.

What are the odds of integrating the linux version of the MAC trace program into this?? Is is even possible to have it automatically run the trace, and log the MAC addy along with the IP??

I think a LOT of board owners would love to see it happen.

Indeed, this is a very elegant way of identifying users. We have clients on a variety of platforms, including BSD, FreeBDS and Solaris. A MAC+IP lookup and registration hack would be mucho nice!

Excellent suggestion, LadyFire smile

Thanks smile

I actually think that a pretty decent Perl programmer could (or perhaps has, and i have simply not run across it yet, although i have been keeping my eyes on freshmeat.net and sourceforge both) write a CGI script to do the MAC lookup.

Of course, if we were gonna get TOTALLY next level, there would be a CP module to allow you to periodically search for duplicates...but then again...we can't always have EVERYTHING we want wink

I would be thrilled just to get it going for IP AND MAC logging on registrations and posts.

Our site has around 5000 members now, and the number of repeat offenders just keeps growing....with the log in required option now available, being able to check the MACs on registration and posting would be a pretty solid way of keeping out the problem children.
