The Blue Arrow Returns, at long last! ... ... ... Okay, so some of you haven't been around forever and a day. What is the Blue Arrow? Back in the good old days, *EVERYTHING* that the UBB returned to the user was generated on the fly. This allowed for very cool things, such as The Blue Arrow. When you entered a thread, you could click on a blue arrow icon (thus the name) to get jumped down to the newest posts in the thread. Unfortunately, doing this required having the entire thread generated on the fly. That was a Bad Thing. So in UBB 4.75 (yes, version four point seven five), Ted switched to flat .html files for each of the threads. That unfortunately got rid of the handy blue arrow. I tried bringing back the Blue Arrow last year, but unfortunately I met with a severe problem - pages. I couldn't figure out how to jump users from one page to another, or figure out how to determine what posts were on what page. So I tried again with UBB6, and had MUCH more success. This hack is the result. And here it is: http://solareclipse.net/Charles/revengeofthebluearrow.txt Please take the notes within seriously. I offer no support. I will not help you put the link in another location, as you can easily do so on your own with a little brain power. Enjoy! [ August 07, 2001: Message edited by: Charles Capps ]

in the .txt for this hack it says "NO SUPPORT" a bunch of times. So where can I get some support? Ok... seriously, this hack is great. I'm installing it tonight as well. About the name though.... when I change the arrow image, like you know I will, can I still call it the "Blue Arrow Returns" hack? [ August 13, 2001: Message edited by: Stilgar ]

Don't forget the / after alt=''.
W3C's validator doesn't check it because it's a part of the JavaScript code.

This code relies on the routines in 6.1.0. It can not be ported to 6.0x.

For some reason, on some thread (like this one), when I click on the Blue arrow I'm not being taken to the last page. Doesn't happen on all threads. This thread had 15 replies, so I tried to find another one that also had the same number, such as this thread , but that one worked. Then I tried this one and had the same problem. Had 22 replies at the time. Seems to be occuring on threads with 2 pages. It handles the larger threads fine. Another odd thing is that I've replied to both of the threads where I encountered the problem. You can tell right away when looking at the url when mousing over the arrow. It'll miss the &p=2. Thought I'd mention it, if anyone else was encounting this...or it was a user issue -Tacks

It shows you the latest reply since your last visit, not the last reply of the thread. So if the last reply you saw was #1 and now there are 10, it will show #2, not #10.

You should have in there to upload a file Down.gif that they want to use as the picture, other than that, great!! I installed it easily.

True, but for most they would still need to read the directions to figure out what directory to stick it in.

No problem, there isnt any thing like a legal og illegal hack. A hack is a hack as long as its posted here at UBBDev.
Post your hack, and also modify it for the 6.0x boards if you can.

Maybe it's not 'illegal' (and maybe it is ), but it won't be so ethical to do it without asking Charles. [ August 12, 2001: Message edited by: LK ]

Excuse me, it's UBBDev policy (read: UBBDev Policy) to respect the hack authors decision in how the hack is run. He can release the hack with Charles' permission, as it'd be right.
Sorry, but the way things work is respecting how the hack author wants things done with his/her hack. Charles is also one of the admins here, and the programmer at Infopop, BTW.

Hehe..dont make this a problem If Charles Caps wanted to port this hack awaylable to the other UBB versions he could have done so. Everyone understand that you cant demand the hackauthor to do so, but if he dont do it, I cant think of any reason that there should be restrictions to let other people do it. The only reason to deny people to do it, must be motivated by some commercial interest to force the users to buy 6.1, or renew their members area access to be able to use it. And that is NOT FAIR PLAY [ August 13, 2001: Message edited by: knudre ]

I just "tried" this out -- and it kept jumping me back to CC's original post in this thread.
I even went to page #2 and then backed out of the thread, and then came back in. It still took me to the first post in this thread.
Am I missing something here? I know that if this works the way that it was described, my board members will adore this hack.

It brings you to the first post that you haven't seen yet (by your cookie).
That means that if in your last visit you saw posts 1-25, now it'll jump to #26.

The site had been upgraded to 6.1.0 Public Beta 1.4. The hacks you are used to seeing will need to be added again, after verification that they will work with the changes in the new version. You will notice this with a lot of the other "features" you are used to seeing. A little time, and they shall return. -Tacks
