howdy

i got my own server and i wanna use ssi with regular html file extensions

i made a .htaccess file and wrote in it XBitHack on and uploaded it to my sites root directory (something i seen here from a post)

but it just simply showed a error message and the WHOLE site was inaccesiable. so i rewrote the htaccess file and uploaded a blank one. its fine now..

question is -

what do i need to do to enable this. whats the common solution?

thank you

some of the ubb forum hacks require the file extentions .html and it makes adding a ssi call for a header and footer to the board awsome and ALOT less time consuming. at least if i remember correctly

well i tried the code but ARRGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH! i didnt work confused

i quess i make a simple .htaccess file and then just upload the code to my root directory. this right?

when i added the code to this file and uploaded it i got a internal error throughout the entire site. not just my ubb.

do you have to name the .htaccess file something like nameoffile.htaccess?

i dont get it.

thanks for helping. i asked "MY UNHELPFUL RAQ PROVIDERS NAME HERE" and they obviously didnt get what i meant. theyve been so helpful. [bold]NOT!!![/bold].lol

oh well thanks again. i appreciate any help

it is just .htaccess.

You can only do this if you are running on an Apache server and it is configured to parse .shtml documents or SSI period (mod_includes is installed properly)

Just use a standard text editor, such as Notepad that comes with Windows, and make a new file. Add the one line of text to the file that Greg said,
» AddHandler server-parsed .html
and then save the file as simply ".htaccess".

Go into your FTP program (WS_FTP?) and connect to your server. Upload the .htaccess file you just saved in ASCII mode to the root of your server's HTML directory. (public_html or public or htdocs?) Make sure that you uploaded in ASCII mode, otherwise it probably won't work.

Then go into your HTML document and add the following line of code where you want the included file to show up/

Sounds like handler mappings aren't allowed in your .htaccess files and only in your httpd.conf.

This is a common setup to stop users doing bad things.

Just a thought smile
