with the birth of content islands -- allowing you to add a line or two of code to a separate area in order to pull information from yer MBs and display it elsewhere...

has anyone tried this in flash MX?

flash MX has largely improved on its importing abilities (it being able to read outside code, read from outside text files, import outside images, etc)

so has anyone tested a content island in a flash mx movie?

It *SHOULD* be easy to use the RSS dump... Flash can parse XML, the last I checked.

doh.

i dont really know anything about rss. ... or xml.

i mean, ok, i know that in the ubb CP, you can just export the content island in a customized fashion. say, by selecting all posts in any forum, unchecking the styled html output and checking rss .92 (or 1.0).

hitting 'create' gets yer rss output

checking that out now by clicking the provided link gives me a whole huge page of code, but i'm assuming all i actually need is the xml string, which'll look something like "http://www.robkamphausen.com/ubb/ContentIslands/4/rss10.xml"

but... uh... then what?

how do you import that information into flash? more importantly, how do you harness and then display the information?

i've used various techniques to import and display various external txt files in flash before, but those methods don't apply to this type o'stuff. so, i was wondering if anyone else out there had succesfully done it.

I suggest spending some time on Google. A quick search for "xml actionscript" found this article...

i make things purdy -- i dont make'em smart! wink

i've actually made a lot of progress with this tonight. so much in fact, that my work helped me realize part of my initial thinking was incorrect (thus, a new question here )

the basic premise can be accomplished with flash mx or mx 2004 (i'm assuming).

using the freebie components for dynamic text (and scroll bars if necessary), then applying a decent amount of code on the dynamic text box, telling it to retreive the xml output.

purdy nifty.

in theory wink
