Guys, I have to share with you a most impressive letter I just received from Araxis:

Dear Eileen,

Thank you for purchasing and registering Araxis Merge!

> Comments:
> It's a bit expensive for a single user. A lot of my friends loved
> the trial version but simply couldn't afford to buy.

Thank you for your comments -- I understand what you're saying. It's very
difficult for us to set prices because we have such a wide range of
different types of customers. Some are individuals spending their own money;
others are people using the software for several hours every day as part of
their work. We are sensitive to the price issue, and sometimes look
favourably on individual requests for a discount if the price is too high
for some potential customers. I'd encourage your friends to get in contact
with us and it might be that we can work something out regarding pricing for
them.

Many thanks,

Hello,

for those who are not using Windows, but also are interested in a tool to help merging the files: I just found a very nice tool for Java: http://www.guiffy.com/ - it's running under all platforms supporting java (for example Sun Solaris, OS/2, Linux, Windows, ...).

Kind regards,

Carsten

That's a great find. A lot cheaper than Araxis too! Thanks for telling us all about it.

I'm in contact with the author of Guiffy, Bill Ritcher, right now. He seems to be very reliable and obliging.

I'm quite sure that I will order a copy for me. I love the idea behind Java and the ability to run such program on every operating system platform.

Eileen,

I tested Guiffy and used it to update from 5.0.6 to 5.0.7 and I have to say: It's impressive. I only can highly recommend this great piece of software.

It's not only much cheaper than Araxis Merge and works on all operating system platforms, but also has some big advantages over Araxis!

Give it a try, if you haven't already!

I was reluctant to try it and and discover I'd wasted my money on Merge but I can't resist any longer - I'll have to go get it. grin

I'm very intersted in your opinion about that tool.
I think it's very important to know that the author is a very nice guy. He offers different install files for guiffy on his web site (Windows, Solaris, Linux, MacOS, ...), but he didn't have one for OS/2. So I wrote him a mail an within a few hours he produced a zip archive for me which I could install and use on OS/2. That's a pretty good service - and I only know a few developers who are providing such good service (of course, Scream is one of them []/w3timages/icons/smile.gif[/]). So I feel very comfortable when I decide to purchase a copy of that Guiffy thingy.
