Hi,
several times I got this annoying problem and already some of my forum members asked for enhancement of the new post tracking.
Imagine you are away for one week, come back and every board in your forum has got more than 100 new posts. You open one board, start to read the posts, but after 50 posts you feel tired. With (or without - doesn't matter) logging out, you close the browser. Next day you come back and want to continue reading the next 50 posts of the board, but (!) they are not marked as new anymore.
Does this mean we force our members to read (worst case) thousands of posts all at once? If not, they will be marked as read anyway. Will it be possible to only mark a post read, if it really was read? After all these unread posts are still new for the person who didn't read them!

Unfortunately I don't know if that will ever be possible. Ok, let me rephrase that. It's definitely possible from a coding standpoint, but I don't know if that will ever be possible without making things real slow. Basically to do this you'd need to have one more table that has 2 rows. A Userid and a postnumber. Every time someone reads a post/thread all of the post numbers would need to be inserted into that table. When the postlist page is displayed it would need to grab all of the post numbers from the thread and then do a query against the new table and the user's userid. Same thing with showflat and showthreaded. When I first started coding .threads I was actually doing this, but as soon as the length of some of the threads started to grow it became apparent that it wasn't going to be fast enough.

I wonder if a custom Mozilla plugin that interfaces with UBB.threads could be a solution. E.g., the browser could store the last-read info. Threads would provide incremental data updates to keep it current.

This is off the top of my head, I am prepared to go down in flames In postlist, add a column that has a checkbox. The visitor can select whichever posts they are interested in, click a submit button, and all the threads selected get added to Remind Me. This would allow posts to be added to Remind Me without actually having to read the post.
