I'm running Redhat 7.0 with kernel 2.2.16-22, gcc 2.96, MySQL 3.23.45, and PHP 4.1.2.

I'd like to upgrade MySQL from 3.23.45 to 3.23.54a.

navaho posted in the MySQL forum that it's not safe to use the recent MySQL binary RPMs for a Linux kernel that old, and that the upgrade should be performed using the source RPM.

But at mysql.com, it says that it's not safe to rebuild from source using gcc 2.96, and that gcc should be downgraded to 2.95 first.

I found this article on how to downgrade gcc from 2.96 to 2.95.3. Does the procedure in that article look correct?
