I have arachnophillia as my hack editor? is there a easier one to use? Would really like to simplify following along on the bigger hacks.

think it was ubbdev that used a drop file editor and all you did was install. Do we have something like that for ubbt? Just trying to minimize the pain of a hack gone bad. Still get the sinking stomach when I blow the board up on a hack.

If you want to apply hacks easily, you'll rather use a file comparison tool than a normal texteditor.

Beyond Compare and Araxis Merge are popular ones.

This may be a bit late, but I've found both Crimson Editor, and JEdit to be rather nice. If you're dealing with a lot of stuff, especially in upgrades, Beyond Compare is extremely helpful as well.

Beyond Compare is very useful for upgrading

Would be nice to have a threads skin for multihack, but troy got tired of it before finishing...

jEdit, nuff said
www.jedit.org

since its java it will run on anything, has a vast number of plug ins including the wonderful ftp plug in (modify/save directly to your site, wonderful for modin)

and the best part about it:
free, open source, isn't life great. download it today and it will be the last text editor you'll ever use.

ultra edit is good as well, but it costs $

I still get by with Programmer's File Editor.

It's no longer maintained, but it's free, and has the features you need.

I've been using Winsyntax. No frills, but has color coding. http://www.winsyntax.com

I use CuteHTML. The latest version (2.3) has tag coloring for perl (which works for PHP as well).

So far I have used the word pad.. to open direction files... easy for the find this and replace.

Then I have been using the arachnophilia as my main editor... has a handy paste plain text.

I downloaded the beyond compare and have been playing with that ...nice tool for comparison.

I have lots hacks in now... didn't document them inside script... I have trouble when I add new hacks over the old ones.. yikes.
When I add a new hack I create a originals file and load the unaltered ones that work in to that... so when I blow my copy and paste I can recover. That seems to be working pretty good so far.

That topstyle editor for stylesheets is sweet. Now if I can get those dang table wrappers working...

I have a copy of ultra edit that needs some funding... I realy like it for coding with the line numbers when I get parse errors I can look to see some of the real basics.

thanks for all the great ideas.. off to try a few of them.

Zend Studio 2.5. Very good for debugging but pricey.
