literally!

a question: what is the benefit to allowing users alter the subject in a thread?

being a classic lifer, we've never had that option. once y'have a subject, yer stuck with it (unless you edit the first post, of course). but now, a thread can change subjects with every reply.

its not a huge deal if that happens, but not necessarily something i like. ... is there any benefit to having that option?

Well you could disallow the changing of post subjects simply by making the subject box a hidden field versus text field for input in editpost.tmpl

I'm going to somewhat agree with drk here. In the past, I have had troublemaker members who found out they could change the subject of their reply to avoid things like the bad word filter, or to put in quips to poke fun at other members, etc...

Essentially, the ONLY time my members change the subject in their replies is for breaking the rules or causing trouble. I have yet to see this used in a good way. I would think this should be an option to turn on or off, or maybe not included at all.

If someone has seen a lot of legitimate use for this, please speak up. But I can say from what I've seen on my site, nobody bothers to alter the subject in their replies unless it is for bad, not good simply because they know it doesn't adhere to the same rules as posts.

well the fix is easy. Plus you can also set your post edit time to something small like 30 mins or 1 hour this would eliminate things like this as well.

On our board that is in defaulted in threaded view people basically post their replies in the subject fields. This makes it so conversations take place in the chains of subject lines (usually one line).

If ubbthreads did not have threaded view we would not be using it on our site.

We're stuck in threaded type posting because the forum was originally hosted on a server.com discussion board that operates that way and discussion would usually be one line replies.
Example: http://disc.server.com/Indices/14159.html
