Please take a look at my new logo -notice the jagged edges around curved surfaces. How can I get the edges smooth? I'm using Macro Media Fireworks MX.

well what I do is go into a paint program like Paint shop pro 7 and then use the selection tools and cut which makes a edge usually..

It almost looks like the circle was cut out of a black background so it dithered the edges to black. Since your background is pretty light if you paste that into a white background and recut the circle then it might look a bit better. Here's a transparent one that might look ok once it's stuck on your light grey background. Might still be a bit rough, so maybe the background should be set to the same light grey shade before recutting it.

No kidding, did you see the logo he did for my site? Even the guitar players were commenting on how great he is with this stuff. I reduced the size so it's lost some resolution but you get the point.

I have the canvas color set to transperant. What I did to clean it up was set the mate color (the color that FW MX uses for the dithering) to a medium shade of grey. It looks fine against most light colored backgrounds, but it will look like crap on anything dark. I'm still playing with FW to try to smooth out the graphic some more...

If I cut it against a dark background then the dithering wouldn't even show, so I'm thinking that I'll probably do a dark style sheet and set my site up for only that one style. Designing for multiple style sheets is a real pain unless you keep your site looking very simple...

<img src="blank.gif" class="logo" />

you could do that, and use a different image for each style, allowing for light and dark styles

Edit: You'd set the css background images accordingly

Been there, done that, and still a pain in the back side if you maintain more than a few style sheets...

Yeah, I hit that brick wall every time I want to add a stylesheet here. It works well, but a PITA to keep updated.

That's why I'm trying to design a logo that will look good with multiple style sheets, buy I think I'm gonna design a light text / dark background CSS and just drop down to that one style...

If you're after a logo that will look good in any stylesheet then the best thing to do is do a non-circular one. Circles have alot of edges to dither to make them smooth looking so it's not easy to make them look good on both light and dark. That's why I changed my avatar to one with all straight outside edges.

I have some very talented, younger, members on the board. they are wanting to start a graphinc site for gamers to get avatars and sigs. They are playing arond with some images and come up with some really good ones.

If I get some time today Ill post a few in a thread over at the "chit chat" area

I hate threads on my own site that aren't resolved, so I'm posting an update to this one...

Cureved surfaces are going to have "jaggies" -no way around it. But you can reduce the severity by using a mate color that matches the background that the graphic will be displayed on. So the jagged areas just sort of blend in.

I also changed the default color for the body property on all of my style sheets to the same color I used as the background color for the graphic. Since I used a neutral shade of gray (#e6e6e6) it blended in with all of the default styles that ship with Threads.

I don't have Paint Shop Pro, and I'd rather stick to Macromedia Fireworks MX 2004.
