Hi all

It's been a long time.

I am using v. 6.4.2 and it's running on fedora core 1 with mysql 3.23 apache 2.0

our server spec:
single xeon 2.4, scsci cheetah, 1GB ECC REG.

Now the forum holds 50,000 members, 700,000 posts with online users 450. The load average is about 15 which is a heavy load and mysqld often down.

Now, I am ready to upgrade with small budget which can be used for either:
a. add 1 more xeon 2.4 + 1GB ECC REG (TOTAL SPEC: 2 xeons + 2GB ECC REG)
b. add 2GB ECC REG (TOTAL SPEC: 1 xeon + 3GB ECC REG)

any suggestion which option should I take?

more memory helps usually more then the cpu speed unless its drastic.. say switching from a p3 to a xeon..

si, more memory unless the processor speed is a drastic upgrade and your server is setup to take advantage of the extra processor correctly. An extra gig of ram is always welcomed by mysql - provided you tune mysql for your settings correctly Jeremy posted a couple excellent tutorials on tuning mysql/memory in the mysql forum

And also have a look at your discs, they need to be fast too.
