Since my service provder would not allow me to have SSI pages, I created this simple hack to display the Latest Active Topics on my Index page and other non-Forum pages to drive traffic to my site.

This is like the news fader hack, but you don't need SSI.

Please read the nonSSInewsfader.txt file before asking for help. Do not modify the search2.txt file, simply rename it per the instructions and save it to your cgi directory.

Demo: NSXSC.com

Two files are needed for this hack, but not much coding is required.

non-SSI News Fader 1.0
Second required file

Please ask for help here, no email please.

Enjoy!

I like it NSX, thanks... my web host at stand's present site doesn't have a clue on how to set SSI for cgi scripts up, this should look good anyways.

You are welcome.
You probably want to take the $header out of the output, for those with lots of header... will really mess up the output. You have the $footer taken out already.

Other than that, looks good.

You can leave the name, or other info in the hack by simply looking at the search.cgi file and compairing it to the search2.cgi file and putting back in any html code that you want.

Can this be setup to show only the most recent threads from one particular forum? Will it show them if they have not been replied to in the last day?

I'd like to be able to set up a section that only allows certain people to start threads with newsworthy items. In particular, I might be able to use this for a 'newsletter' that is published on the site every week.

That way the guy that publishes it could get the latest links to show up on the front page of the site without my having to edit the front page myself every week to update the links.

You know, I'm not sure. All this hack does is take the UBB search results and display them. So if you can create a search result with the items you are asking about, it could be done. But that is over my head. Anyone?

Any idea why we would be getting "Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator,
..." when we run the search2.cgi?

I found out another way of using this cool hack. The current hack uses a scroll window, but you could also have the current topics show up just like a part of your page. You can see an example at www.nsxsc.com/news.html Just look at the lower, right hand corner. My lastest topics show up as part of the page now. You still need to download the search2.txt file and change it to search2.cgi and upload to your cgi-bin. But instead of using the first file for creating the scroll window like I'm using here: www.nsxsc.com, you can use the following code to insert your current active topics into any page:

Be sure to change the URl location in the script or you will be posting my topics!

Have fun!
