I have hacked my board so that my members can send a PM to anyone simply by typing in their name.



I am willing to document it; however, it will ONLY work in a very special circumstance.

My board REQUIRES members to use their login name as their publicly displayed name. Otherwise, this hack doesn't work. I have a feeling not many other boards do this; therefore I have not taken the time to document my work. I will gladly do so if somebody needs it though.

So, it'll send to the login name, but if you don't know someone's login name you're screwed? Is that how it was made?

Yes, but I also have a primitive member list for people to use for reference.

The login name = publicly displayed name on my board.

im confused as to how, if it was so easy, no one else has been able to do it, the 1000 times it was asked for...

but then again...

as long as it works, do i really care?? not at all!

I think others were thinking of ripping out the actual PM code to have the ability to type the name directly into the PM form. I worked around that by putting my field on a different form and than calling the PM form the usual way - with the member number passed to it.

By the way, there is an untested version that any board can use. It sends a PM to any member based on member number.
