OK, here is another idea. I don't know if this has already been done or not, so it may not be a new idea for you people. I have some members on my board (v5.47e) that instead of having a few words or lines as their signature, they insist on including a short novel instead.

Is there a way to limit the number of characters to a signature?

Try this, hopefully it will do what you need it to do.

open up ubbmisc.cgi

search for:


Change COLS=25 to COLS=1 and ROWS=3 to ROWS=1

All that will do is make the text box for entering the sig smaller....which might put some users off...but will in no way limit what they can put there.

I have the "Limit Signature Length" installed on a couple boards...it simply limits the number of characters allowed in the sig. It has it's good points and bad..but it works(ish)!!

Credit info is located inside the text file...it is NOT mine to claim...not defend. I could not find this in the database here...I'll see about getting it added. I might have missed it though!

I did get the script to work however, there were a few differences.
Where I had to look for this in ubbmisc.cgi


I couldn't find it at all. I found two occurrences of this:


And placed this underneath at both occurrences:


I then went to the General Setting in the control panel and set the character limit. I know it wont change any of the character limits in the existing sig's, but it works for new members and existing members updating their profile.
