Anyone know how to make True custom avatars...where the user can designate the URL for his or her own rather then requiring the host to upload avatars all the time?

Linking to outside images is a bad idea. Not only does it kill your bandwidth but also that of the server that has the image. Most frown upon such behavior.

I would look at the Drop Down Avatar modification as well as Ely's upload modification. I think there was also another upload modification mentioned here as well.

excuse my ignorance. But why would having images on other servers kill my bandwidth. I had a ahck like the one being requested, but I will not pur it back if there is a bandwidth problem.

By hosting the avatars yourself, it gives you control over the size of the avatar, and what is loaded. You wouldn't want a porn pic as an avatar for a user? It make take a little more administration to maintain the avatars yourself, but it will save you headaches in the long run.

I am in full agreement with Sub Zero - I have seen a board with off-site hosting, and the problems ranged from oversized avatars to inappropriate ones to missig links. It makes for a much cleaner looking board when you have local control over what is used.

yes and its very simple to add new ones when needed .. and when you set a certain level for users to be awarded for there work an fun .. its not that hard .. so again keeping your own is the best choice i feel as well

if you could control the size of an image for the avatar and people linked to them from outside an outside url i really dont see the problem.

i've seen upload limitations and size limitations scripts before so i believe you can only link pictures that meet certain requirements.

ofcourse there are drawbacks as people have pointed out but this is a hack that if controlled correctly can work for some forums.

if your already allowing custom image avatars i don't see the problem.

infact i think alot of people out there would love a more refined and controled scripting system for managing peoples pic sizes in both the avatar and the sig.

Well I registered to ask if anyone knew where I could get a hack like that actually. I'm not real keen on the drop down menu thing. I post at a board that has user defined avatars, and it works quite well.

I could see where it might cause a problem, but for smaller communities it could be very useful and time saving. So anyone know where I can get that hack? laugh

I have the Drop Down Avatar modification for 6.1x, how do I make Ely's upload modification work for uploading custom avatars (and setting their width, height, byte sizes)?

well if you really wanted to, and got permission from qasic to modify his hack, you could probably remove the dropdown combo box in your member profile, and replace the removed picture field (which is what the avatar hack uses, I think)

might work
