I'm sorry if I seem stupid by saying this, but I heard somewhere that if you hit 30,000 members or so, UBB classic would be horribly inefficient and you should go to UBB threads. I'm sorry if I'm wrong, but I heard it somewhere frown

It's not a stupid question, Charles was the one probably smile

UBB is written well, but your number of members and posts can slow it down significantly if your server isn't setup correctly - throw enough hardware at it and you can just about run any size forum.

In other words, hardware is the limiting factor more than anything. Most people run on shared servers, >30k members would significantly slow your forums down. Put your site on a fast server with scsi disks, xeon processors, and loads of ram and you can run it way higher than that. I've seen ubb's with 600+ people on at the same time, it mostly depends on hardware smile

the board i admin, the DC Message Boards , are purdy big, too!

25,000 members (should be 35,000 -- lost a "few" last year) and tens of thousands of threads (even tho everything older than 60 days gets deleted every month)

most impressively, 450 active topics... already! its not even 1pm!

average is in the ball park of 1500

I am sure Hostboard.com could be considered one of the largest. Although admitedly more of a hybrid system.

Catagories - 104
Forums - 2,134
Moderators - 2,654
Posts - 755,118
Threads - 86,480
Users - 82,902

Due to the nature of Hostboard these numbers only represent today and fluctuate daily.

its one hell of an exploding server! smile

23,290 as of 3 pm today (with 520 active topics already!)

we've had... "problems" ... from time to time, due to the size and various bandwith issues. granted, the forum is supported by time warner, so the costs aren't a problem. but everything else is -- especially because its a old-school 5.45 ubb, which as you know, doesn't really like that "excess usage."

one such problem was the afore mentioned loss of just a few member profiles (in the ball park of 8,000!)

a big help in keeping it running smoothely is to prune all posts in all forums older than 60 days on a monthly basis. how or why that helps, i dunno, but it works so far, so i aint stoppin! smile

The more files in a directory, the slower things get - the OS has to search them all to open one single file. That's why pruning helps so much, and that's why we don't advise more than 20,000 members...

You should just move right up to Threads...

if it were my choice, we would have moved up to threads (or at least upgraded to v6) months/years ago.

however, despite my protests, wb looks to be heading in the direction of converting all their forums to wb-created boards.

hopefully, thats preventable (i can only imagine receiving 25,000 emails from people asking me why they have to reregister)

i guess my board is also some sort of 'huge' *g*
about 7oo.ooo single postings (yeah, i already kicked out 2oo.ooo old and chitchat-stuff) and nearly 1ok users so far, still growing.

so, i have to upgrade really soon to 6.5 because of some lil bugs appearing on my board and nowadays i'm still waiting for a sql-backend because of the really huge database but even ubb7.0 or ubb8.0 will be released i guess i'll be missing still that sort of backend :-/

the most interesting thing about my board is maybe the unique layout: no portal, no chat, no instantmessages and quite unique background-gfx as well as NO moderators as well as NO subcategories, no advertising, no banner and no unnecessary modules/hacks *g*

2allen, i'm just afraid to kick over the truly nice look&feel with an upgrade: main thing would probably be including the background-gfx again but maybe this should be easy to do. also including dpks smiley-hack is really important, so, well, i just wait to get in touch with our sysadmin to start the upgrade *g* - he's too lazy but the only guy who's able to .tar/.zip the complete bbs for safety reasons before upgrading... any ideas how to improve the look&feel of my site with 6.5? no, i do not like to include a chat, but .. any suggestions *G* ?

hmmmm.... there's already many of the modifications you've added in the base code already smile The look and feel has been refined quite a bit since your version. Adding your graphics back, maybe the quick reply and calendar, and you'd be set... at least for now wink

Heh infopop should make ubb.classic with an integer to use sql or flat files, then they can work for everyone smirk... becides, with SQL you can just do so much more concerning integration...

I've been saying this for 2 and a half years but the official word is that it will never happen. UBB Threads is not a valid option for me since it IS NOT UBB! I guess I'll have to keep UBB since my wife loves Netwerkin but my second UBB license is sitting idle.

heh, i'd love to see it so that there were 2 db options, it'd change so much, and make everything easier to use.

Mine is pretty big, not huge though. Probably the smallest of those listed on this thread, actually.

http://www.nightly.net

around 14,000 members, around half million posts, and 200+ daily active topics

Now if you want to see a HUGE message board...well then look here: http://boards.theforce.net/ It isn't a UBB, but it's ginormous. 12 million posts, 115,000 members, 5000 active daily topics, 250 forums.

This is the designed behavior.

I thought mine was fairly large lol... We now have 2000 members (1000 in 2 months due to the spider mod)! It should go up more due to spidering being default in the UBB now smile ...

It now works with 6.6+ lol... Reads most URL types; not half bad. Since not a piece of it is Micah's code we didn't put his copyright back on, but the url's are basically the same as the original... Check ugn's lol... http://www.undergroundnews.com/boards/ although we can't figure out how to make the cookies work right for the post indicators, but the rest is all good :x

Couldn't get mine to work at all; always just spit out errors... We recoded it a bit, even changed the .htaccess lines to get it all working nicely with eachother lol...

Definatly good, especially without having to advertise it wink
