Interesting story, just happened to the site I used to work on.. They moved servers, and somehow, within a week, apparently managed to cause thousands of dollars worth of damage to the server, apparently by accident.. Now, the idiocy of the site admin not withstanding, how is it possible? I heard a few mumbled things about too much traffic for Virtual hosting, (which makes no sense, since that's what they did on the old server too).. Interesting speculations anyone?

It would be hard to do without using bad scripts, memory hogs, dangerous programs, strain, etc.

It sounds impossible to cause actual physical damage to a server, tho you can delete software, corrupt software, etc, but that's just a matter of re-installing it again, it's isn't really gone forever. They must be talking about wages spent to repair the software, databases, etc.

Yeah, I have a couple of theories as to what it could be, but I dunno really.. just thought it was weird.. I mean, the site wasn't exactly huge (around 2600 hits a day), wasn't running anything special in terms of scripts, just a news publisher and ubb... Yet somehow they managed to apparently cause a lot of damage, presumably in down time for other sites.. or something..

that makes more sense.. downtime can be hazily related to dollars, especially on a server that hosts e-commerce sites.

But still, don't know how it could happen, that one site pulled down an entire server?

Had to have been. I let one of our servers sit at over 100 load avge for over an hour and after a reboot it was fine. And yup, it was just one site that did that. Something about putting a script into an endless loop or something like that.
Picture perfect penmanship here.

I'd challenge them if i were them, lucia. Make them prove it was them, and if they can't, maybe the judge in a federal court can.

Lol, well it's not my problem, given that I left the said site due to the idiocy of the co-webmaster, so it's his problem now .. I was just curious because I just couldn't figure it out..
