Hey guys... for the longest time I have been doing my ubb testing on a machine running win9x/me using PWS + Activestate perl but after moving to XP and already being burned by the magic that is Nimda I think it is time to change.

I have a couple questions -
1 - Should I use Apache , Iplanet or some other server....

2 - What steps do I take to install perl on NT? any different than on a 9x machine?

Thanks

Dude, use IIS. It's like PWS' big brother and is by far and away a better server, you have to install it using the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel applet, and go to Optional Windows Components and choose Internet Information Services. Anyhway, all the configuration is done via Administritave Tools in XP, once IIS is installed there will be a snap-in there to configure it, and from there, it's pretty easy. There is even an introduction to administrating a web server included which should get you well on your way.

All of the above assumes you are using XP Pro, it might work on XP Home, but I amn't sure if IIS is included on it. Anyways, if you are using XP Home I thoroughly reccomend Apache and ActiveState ActivePerl, configuring it is pretty simple just folow the intstructions included with both packages.

If that is beyond you download Nusphere MySQL despite the name, it is Perl friendly. It is a ~30MB download and it will configure and install Perl, PHP, MySQL, Apache, SendMail and webmin on your PC, it's a pretty decent package.

The NuSphere package out of the box makes life easy but to get the "real" hand on things, I suggest you install Apache, ActiveState, MySQL, and PHP manually to get the real hang of things. That way, you know what you have for certain. They're not really hard to install; there's just a higher learning curve but in the end it all evens out. For example, by default SSI isn't enabled inside httpd.conf on Apache so you'll have to learn how to do it manually.

If you install ALL of the latest patches for IIS, you should be safe from getting the Nimda virus. Also, running a decent firewall and antivirus software should prevent you from getting Nimda. I have a dedicated IIS box at my office for the Intranet, and didn't have problems with nimda after I patched the server. Just some tips from a SysAdmin who has been burned by some careless users.
