Some of you may have noticed the "Member Spotlight" link to the lower left. Sort of a "UBB of the Month", we are now looking for examples of excellence in the internet world of ubb's.

If you feel your site has that perfect blend of modifications, appropriate color scheme, great integration with the rest of your site, and a certain "je nais sais quoi", please submit it to our showcase ... if you have already submitted in the past, please re-submit and let us know you would like to be included...

One top site will be highlighted monthly, with the honored site being allowed to sport a special "UBB DevZone" badge. Every six months a grand prize of a year's license (for a licensed version) will be awarded to one of the previous six month's honoree's... so get your submissions in... we'll be choosing one on the 15th of each month with a "spotlight" posted on the 25th of each month. This will consist of an interview with the webmaster, screen shots of their site, and an informative "how-to" so you can learn some secrets of the trade.

Good luck,

coolio. If I ever fix my large problem, I'll submit mine.

You should come up with a prize for freeware too....a conspicuous link? On the sidebar maybe? Or...free vodka or something. Or....a special ranking that goes under that person's name for a month (Spotlight UBB). Something.

This applies to freeware as well, unless you don't want a full license, we'll think of something else... [Linked Image]

not fair, zanardi will win [Linked Image], that gonna take me a long time to catch up with...is it just a vote?

This is not open to moderators or admins of this site, or I would award it to myself...[Linked Image]

Being a moderator here (and doing a good job of it), will bring similar awards (can't let the cat out of the bag just yet)...

wow, a license. Pretty gnarly...

Though I for one would be hard pressed to come up with money for future payments. [Linked Image]

Actually, I'm a bit confused about payment for a licensed board, but I'll ask that somewhere else.

It's now the 10th, only 5 more shopping days until the first judging of UBBDev.com's inaugural "Member Spotlight" event.

Some of you have had questions, and we of course had answers... here's one that has come up:
Quote
quote:

Thank you for asking... that's a good question, one we here at ubbdev.com have wrestled with in building this site (and one we are still working on). The judges will consist of the moderators, a couple of which use NS, so it should at least be viewable in NS, but rechecking it in NS will help you score a few more points with them...

You have to keep in mind, the point of this is to highlight excellence in design, user experience, site integration, style, and use of modifications to enhance all of the above. This doesn't mean perfection (tho we would like to see it ourselves), but it does mean much better than average... it will definitely be a learning experience for all involved, as well as everyone who reads the interviews posted later.

Those sites who reach for that higher rung of excellence, will take into consideration NS as well as IE users, since these do make up more than 90-95% of the users out there.... good luck.

My board looks great in lynx. Or it used to. Took a hell of a long time to make all the ASCII art, though.

i would like to make a suggestion...why is it open to everyone, it should only be open to the people with freeware boards, they have to do alot more hacking then the people with the regular boards, besides people with regular boards already HAVE a license. So really if you gonna do this it should be for just freeware, OR have 2 winners: a freeware winner, and a License winner. That way its fair to everyone.
Posted By: Digital Boy Re: Member Spotlight - 09/11/2000 1:28 PM
CE -

I like the idea of having two winners as well, but I don't think it's about that. I think it's just about highlighted a member and their accomplishments.

Digital Boy -

Well, i understand that...its just that if you have freeware you've accomplished alot more then the people with the full version. It was just a suggestion, at the time i thought it would work better having 2 catorgories, I still do.
Posted By: H.A.L.L. Re: Member Spotlight - 09/11/2000 11:33 PM
i have to agree , i think it should be between free & full..but a different "prize" fo each of dem...na mean...jus a suggestion
Posted By: CE Re: Member Spotlight - 09/12/2000 12:08 AM
like the people with the freeware boards, should win the license, the people with full boards DONT NEED IT, they already have one.

It is not about freeware vs. licensed... never has been. It is about excellence in design, site integration, apropriate modifications, color scheme and graphics...

This is intended as a learning experience and to highlight a member's much higher than average site. It will benefit everyone.

The UBB license is just a bonus... whether or not you have paid for one now, or not, you will still have to pay for a license if you want to upgrade to the latest licensed version in the future. My license expires next June, I would really like to have someone give me another year of upgrades after that....

Really, you can either complain about it now, or you can do something about it and submit your site, it's that simple... someone will be chosen this weekend for the first month's highlight...

Just a reminder, submission deadlines are tonight at midnight (CST) for the first month's selection. A site will be chosen by the staff this weekend, with the winner being contacted by me on Monday to arrange for an interview by email.

The results will be announced on the 25th with the interview being presented...

All those that aren't selected this time will automatically be re-entered for next month's member spotlight, unless formally withdrawn by the webmaster.

This will be fun, good luck to everyone!

The UBB Developer's Network "Member Spotlight" contest is ONLY open to registered UBBDEV members who are NOT already administrators or moderators. [sorry gang, but this is for the benefit of our members, not us.]

I have been looking for judging criteria for this contest, and this is the thread that i was told to go to. I have failed to find any though.

What is the guideline for judging? Is the sites homepage supposed to be part of the criteria? or it strictly the ubb? I know my ubb is pretty nice looking, but my homepage, i'm willing to admin, is currently trash.

Posted By: cal Re: Member Spotlight - 10/30/2000 9:54 AM
Each moderator, judges all of the sites and gives marks out of 10 in five categories:

[*]Design integration
[*]Appropriate color scheme
[*]User experience
[*]Appropriate use of hacks
[*]Overall excellence

Then an average for each site is calculated. Each mod submits their top 3. A first place gives 3 points, a second place 2 and a third place 1. The total points for each site are calculated and a winner is announced. It's pretty damn fair.

And even if your homepage looks **** , it's the ubb that matters. Of course if your whole design is poor, or hard to use, then you'll lose marks in certain areas.

But keep up the good work people. It was a lot closer this month.
