http://www.gearhost.com/services/hosting/shared/prices-features.asp

I was looking at their deals and it looks pretty good I found this link either in here or at the infopop forums and was wondering is it worth going witht them? and do they have what I need I was thinking of going with the platinum deal.

My main concern is do they support the infopop forums ie are the specs god enough and is there internet connection good.

I'm hosted with them right now. The servers and connection are good. All good stuff like that. And the customer service is excellent as well.

The only thing I'm not happy with is their control panel, which is a long way from being finished and they keep pushing back their deadlines. They have made big strides since its state when I first signed up, and anything that doesn't work, the support team is happy to do for you manually. But still, its a small annoyance.

Well, I just grabbed a 15 dollar a month account. it appears to be an IIS server which is fine...gonna run some stuff on it so I can see the performance.

I was impressed with the speed of getting the account going. Less than 5 minutes after I used my card i had an e-mail with my dedicated IP and control panel/FTP access.

The control panel looks promising, as soon as it's done.

sweet. thanx guys it sounds promising but what does it run unix or windows laugh

Looks like hopefully Ill be getting my forum up and running this weekend

To be honest, I put a copy of my .com board up there to test the performance and it isn't that great. I may use it for something else unless they respond and improve it.

Last I checked, they do have unix. But you have to request it specifically. You might try calling their number (888-535-5443) and checking about that to make sure, tho, just in case.

Hi all,
Did you guys said this web host service supports UBB?
I just signed up for an account and it seems like it does not work with UBB. It does not sound like CGI is supported in this web server. Did anyone success using this web hosting for UBB, please let me know and help me out.

Thanks

It's a Windows server, not Unix, so setting it up is quite a bit different. It does support UBB, because my forums are running on it right now. smile

Hi Jamin,
So what should I do or configure in order to make it work for UBB? I just follow the instruction to setup the UBB and put everything (cgi-bin, ubb, Members ...) directory into the www folder and I run the hello.cgi and ubb6_test.cgi and it does not seem to work.
Please help me out and let me know what should I do.
Thanks alot Jamin

I had my account discontinued. I had a help ticket open for 7 days with no response at all and the performance of the UBB on there had my testers screaming at me. It was horrible. It would literally take 60 seconds for the sumarry page to load unless it was the middle of the night then it was acceptable.

I went to their website and clicked on a link to their billing dept. to have my account removed and they had misspelled it so the mail bounced (they had [email protected] instead of billing) and it took 3 e-mails over 3 days to finally get a reply and then they were nasty about it.

My account was in the first 30 days but they still haven't honored their 30 day guarantee to refund my money.

I can honestly say that they are the worst host that I have dealt with to date and I have 4 sites running on 4 different "good" host right now. If you want a kick butt host then go to www.digitalprinceton.net and tell them that XPerT sent you. These guys bend over backwards to make your experience a good one.

Was it really that bad? Everyone else's sites and their [GearHost] test site was really fast. I was going to try out the 5 dollar plan, but not if it's as terrible as you just said...

This is a quote from their legal page : "All cancellations must be received through our web site as per the deadlines indicated. Phone requests will not constitute acceptance of any cancellation."

They had some bad problems with their upstream provider last week, and service was very slow and stuff. But it is all fixed now, and is just as fast as any other host I've been on.

I cancelled through the website, and before the end of the 3rd week.

I'm gonna try their $5 plan for a month. The worst that could happen would be that I lose out on five bucks. If it's any good, I just might keep on using them.
Posted By: RandyM Re: GearHost Any good? - 02/18/2002 2:58 AM
I would love to believe that mine was an isolated problem. But bandwidth aside, the fact that I had a trouble ticket open for 7 days is out of line. I gave them a very detailed explaination of the issue and after 4 days they replied with an apology for taking so long and asked me what the problem was. I re-emphasized what the issue was then never heard from them again.

That is a long time. I wonder what was causing such a delay. frown confused

Xpert,
I think it might be just be you because I just open a ticket to tech support today and I received the response in 12 hours (even though it's Sunday today). Not too bad I guess.
Posted By: MenacE Re: GearHost Any good? - 02/18/2002 5:55 PM
Well Ive got the 15 dollar a month deal, it flies its well fast except for when they had their problem last week.

At the moment Im satisfied with their service.

Edit: Except for their control panel which isnt finished yet, and I cant actually tell how much bandwidth I have used.
Posted By: Quackie Re: GearHost Any good? - 02/19/2002 10:52 PM
Well, I just got the $5/month plan and runs really good and fast. After I just sign up for membership, I can upload all the files for UBB and get things running. Even though I got some problem with permision but I got it figure out and everything runs smoothly.
I think GearHost is good so far for me. Cheap and good host. Cannot beat $5/month for a 100MB and 10GB banthwith....

Recommend for everyone ...

That's odd about the support tickets, XP. I have submitted a few support tickets and all have been answered within 12 hours, one was actually answered within 10 minutes. My time there has been fine, and I am being moved to a UNIX server this week by them.
Posted By: MenacE Re: GearHost Any good? - 02/21/2002 4:11 AM
How do you get moved to a UNIX server and what are the initial benefits.
