I learned from reading the first edition of
Programming Perl, but I had already
been programming for many years.

If you are new to programming, I suggest
that you have a look at Perl and CGI for the World Wide Web by Liz Castro. It
has a lot fewer technical errors than most
introductory Perl books aimed at beginning
programmers, and it's also much thinner, which I think is an advantage. Once you
have the basics down you can move to a more advanced and comprehensive reference like
Programming Perl.

Thanks. I'm new at programming. I'm also going to get Perl for Dummies. [Linked Image]

Programming Perl by Wall, Christiansen, Schwarts from O'Reilly is a *must have* -- after all, it's by the Big Perl Daddy hisself, Gary Wall. (It's also pretty damned funny in places.)

Also, extremely helpful to newcomers and old hands alike, is Perl Core Language Little Black Book by Holzner from Coriolis. This is a concise reference of the Perl language, very well indexed and arranged.

DO NOT get Perl for Dummies, it's widely regarded as one of the worst Perl books in existance.

Liz Casto's book has serious issues, so I'm told, also.

Don't get Perl for Dummies. If you're new to programming, it won't help; it's pretty much just a badly-organized reference manual. It includes a lot of junk that you don't need to know, and it's full of technical errors that will only confuse you.

Here is an extensive explanation of what's wrong with Perl for Dummies: http://perl.plover.com/reviews/p54d.html .

The Castro book is a lot better. It's also cheaper, and it has real examples.
