Like Compact Headers, this is basically a mod that streamlines chunks of UBB's table layout. This one deals with (big surprise) the bottom portion of the UBB.

I would like to say that I, honestly, am not very happy with the current way I did the Forum Page and the Topic Page - it really seems like they could be streamlined more somehow. But I'm stuck. If you've got any ideas, please let me know.

Update: Version 1.21 has been released. 1.2: Changes include fixed spacing between the tables in a couple of the files. This also fixes the alignment bug with the Hop To box in forum_page. (1.21 fixes more problems with the Hop To box.)

Anyway, here are links:

INSTRUCTIONS - http://www.se7enet.com/ubb/index.shtml

DEMO - http://www.se7enet.com/site/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi
(Note: The version on my own site is significantly different than the one in the zips. Use this as a demo of the sizes only - what you see on my site isn't what you get in the hack.)

maybe it is just me but if you had "New Post" in the left cell then "All Times are..." in the center cell and "No New Post" in right cell it would look better and maybe if you put the:
Powered by Infopop Corporation
Ultimate Bulletin Board 6.04a
in the left cell of the other table and the
Contact us in the center cell and then your copyright in the right cell. it is just me but i think that would go better then maybe make the 2 tables touch at the top

w00t! looks way better! but i was thinking... any way you could put that hope to drop down menu in one of the tables?
Posted By: Jamin Re: Compact Footers - version 1.21 Final - 04/15/2001 2:55 PM
Well, I tried that. And the problem with it is, that thing actually takes double the space you see. For some reason there is a chunk of blank space under it that can't be removed, that is about the size of another line. I've tried putting it in the table, and it adds a bunch of extra height that isn't needed, which is why the previous design looked so cluttered I think.

Also, in the initial redraw I did, I had it inside the table and had that whole thing on one big line. But it was too wide for 800x600 resolutions, so I had to shorten it. By moving the Hop To box under the table, there's a lot more space that won't cause h-scrolls in lower rez's.

Trust me - if I could get into a table and still have it look even *decent*, I would do it. But it's either outside the table or be too wide for low rez's.

http://www.m2sc.com/want.gif
Posted By: Jamin Re: Compact Footers - version 1.21 Final - 04/16/2001 10:12 PM
You can't get it to look like that, without adding a TON of extra work.

The only way to actually connect the two rows like that, would be to remove the table closer tag in public_forum_summary.pl, and remove the table opener tag in public_common.pl. And by removing the table opener in common.pl, you would render that table completely useless to every other view of the forum. The only way to actually make the table work, from then on, is to add an extra table opener tag into every other public template file. If you felt like you absolutely needed to do that, and had the time, I suppose this would be possible. But IMHO it's really way too much unnecessary work.

As for simply moving the location of the buttons/functions in the top row: just switch the contents of the second and third cells, and make it so the second cell has the width="100%" attribute instead of the third one.

Compact Footers is huge?! Um, it's only like three files. I suppose I'll make one, tho, just for kicks and giggles. Eventually...

Compact Headers is the huge one. That one is for all the public templates. I think that may be the one you're talking about. smile

I will take a look at the forum_page problem tonight when I get home. The hop to box was a very quick fix, and quite honestly I didn't do much testing on it. It looked fine on my test board, so I called it good. I will go back in tonight and redo it to make it correct.

Also, tonight I'll be updating the full distribution file to contain two copies of topic_page.pl - one with Hop To, one without it. So wait till tonight when I get home from work, and I will get the problems fixed asap.

ok the template files u are giving for d/l with both compact header and footer installed is what version of ubb...
is it ubb 6.04e or something lower
Posted By: Jamin Re: Compact Footers - version 1.21 Final - 06/09/2001 1:29 AM
They are from 6.04F.

In every version since 6.03, there have barely been any changes to the templates, so for the most part any files from any of the versions that fall within that range are interchangeable with other versions. If you are seriously concerned with incompatibility, just upgrade to the latest version before you install them. smile

Alright, Compact Footers has been updated to version 1.21. This is just a very quick update that should fix any problems associated with the Hop To box in forum_page.

To upgrade, you'll need to just replace the entire $page_bottom subroutine in public_forum_page.pl. (Everything from my $page_bottom = qq~ to ~; inclusively.)

I've also updated the template distribution file to include two forum_page versions: one with Hop To, and one without it. Check the readme for more info. If you downloaded the template distro file within the last 24 hours, just redownload it and recopy public_forum_page.pl or the no-hop-to version (be sure to read the readme!!).

Hope this fixes the problem. Lemme know if there are still bugs.

Posted By: Jamin Re: Compact Footers - version 1.21 Final - 06/17/2001 6:53 AM
It already contains the NOWRAP attribute in the table cell, which is *supposed* to keep the cell from wrapping down, as it apparently is doing for you.

It could possibly be that Mac browser simply doesn't support the NOWRAP attribute, which is something I have no control over.

The only thing I can think of, is go into public_topic_page, and removing NOWRAP from the TD tag, and adding ... tags just inside the cell that contains the buttons (ie. whatever). That also works I think - but I'm not sure. I seem to remember having mixed results with it... may not be supported by all browsers, even for PC, or something.
