My ubb is fine on IE 5, but users with netscape and IE 4 and below cant see text and the colors are all messed up.

I am not sure what your friend saw.. I pulled your site up in Netscape 4.6 and it looks pretty much the same as in IE5. I do not have any other versions to check it with. The text and background colors all looked the same in both browsers...
