How do I implement a sidebar like on this forum?
Up at the top of the screen, in our Database menu, go to Tutorials > Design Tutorials, and there is (or should be) a tutorial about it.
---Jamin
affraid it isnt... i'd like one as well if someone can point me in the right direction
In the Header field of your Style templates, insert:
quote:
In the Footer field: quote:
|
|
And of course replace BORDERCOLOR, TITLEBGCOLOR and MAINBGCOLOR with their appropriate values, and CONTENT with your actual content.
---Jamin
We formatted as you said Jamin, there's only one problem. When visitors create threads with over 50 pages of replies (you can see some threads here at ubbdev do the same), the whole page is pushed over making everything extremely wide.
I guess what I'm asking is, why don't the page numbers go underneath each other when the line gets too long? Is there any ways to get around that?
Thanks.
Mirko
Just wondering if anyone was interested in helping out with this?
There's a nobr for that line.. you might either wanna edit that out or install the pagination modification like we have here.

Rock on Allen, that pagination mod is sweet!
Yes, all turned out to be much simply. But I am very interested, as I can use SSI in sidebar? Or may be, there is other way to force to work other CGI-scripts?
p.s
Sorry for my english, i am russian
welcome
You can use javascript to include text, javascript, etc in a sidebar
Is it possible to use shockwave elements in the header and footer?
And, how is it different if I want the sidebar on the left instead of the right?

Thank's, I shall try.

All the code goes into the header field.
Thanks. I tried that and was getting strange results, but I abandoned the idea because my left bar required ASP coding. I don't think it's possible without frames if ASP is involved.
mine works like a charm thanks jamin.... mines on the right and it didnt need any asp at all
It'd be all good if someone could tell me how to join the header to the sidebar. Like, so it has a bar going from the top left to the bottom right, around the actual UBB, like yuou often see on sites.

It'd also be good if you could tell me how to join it at the bottom as well.

Check the design tutorial as mentioned in the second post in this thread
That, er, hasn't helped a great deal. I know how to do top, bottom, left and right bars, but how would I go about joining the right bar to the top and bottom ones?

Hey All,
Also looking to integrate a sidebar on my board but I don't quite understand the instructions by Jamin. Sorry for the ignorance but cannot find "Style templates" to insert the code above.
Can someone be more specific as to the location of the file to add this code.
Thank you so much!
figured it out...
Thx anyway.
Ok Im going Nuts here...... I did the right hand side menubar and everything was perfect. But of course , the feel of having a right side menu is awkward. So I followed the intructions from jas to pull all the codes in the header for a left side menubar.
The menubar comesup perfect, its the messageboard that is messed up. It shows up on the bottom of the menubar, leaving a big blank space to the right of the menu.
I spent some time moving things around and never seem to get it right.
What did i do wrong? Maybe someone can post the right sided codes so i dont assume i did it right...

You can fix most all html bugs here:
http://validator.w3.org/ It sounds like you are either closing the right column too many times or you forgot to re-open the td for your forum
it's :
left column | forum | (greatly simplified)
OMG Tons of stuff to fix, time to read up on what half these errors mean lol!
ARGH! I give up on this....
post a link and I'll assist you in getting it straight.
arghhh... I see what you mean
Do me a huge favor and take your header and footer, paste it into a text file with the header up top and post a link to it here... this is something fixable
there is 2 set in there, top one is the current one running, and the one on bottom is the left side menu that never worked right....
My Header and Footer Thanks again for your time...
which one do you want to use? I can do either
If you can get it working, i want a LEFT menubar
you file is corrupted, all I get is gibberish, like it's in binary and not ascii. Can you try once more, this time with just the header/footer you want done?
ok file updated and forced an ascii upload....
My header and footer
not sure what's happening, but this is what I am seeing when opening the file:
‹‹
bah, it won't even paste in here
ok, set one forum at your site with this header and footer and I'll do a view source on it and copy it myself
let me see if i can paste it here...
[edit]Removed to keep this page looking nice....
that should help me
how did you want your layout?
left column | forum
?
couple things jump out immediately.
Your style stuff at the top should go into your headerinsert.
It looks like you switched your header and footer code - moving one to the other.
You open tables in the header and close them in the footer, you have it backwards here. You start your header with a and end it with several
You open your footer with a
when you should be closing the td from the header.
In other words, you moved your column from the right to the left just by switching your header and footer code, It doesn't quite work that way You've got to open the overall table in the header still and close it in the footer.

Thanks for link, used the source from the left side menu, and then i cheated and threw it into dreamweaver to hash it all out. Its all working now... Just need to fix all the remaining bugs that was found with that verifier you have me addicted to.... only like 98235623 more errors to try to figure out .... thanks again Allen
do you have it up? I can look at it as well
My site is at
www.nakkc.org/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi Now to tackle all them errors listed at
http://validator.w3.org Im gonna cry... Hopefully fixing all this will cure my topic page problem with that big purple box, that gets bigger as the thread gets larger..
PS: Allen, Dont u ever SLEEP???
don't need no steenkeeng sleep
here you go:
https://www.ubbdev.com/templates/test.txt I have it marked pretty plainly what goes in the header and what goes in the footer. All is xhtml-compliant except for the virus code. Look at what's been done and see who it's changed.
oh yeah, please remove the
img
stuff from your header insert
Again, thank you SOOOOOOOOO much... /bow
Glad to help, that should improve your load times a bit as well, especially in older browsers
