Two problems/questions on this hack.
First--does it work in both 6.0 and 6.01 or only 6.01?
I tried adding it to 6.0 and almost got it to work (see next comment below) but after trying to rate a topic, received a cgi error code about being unable to open line 63 in ubb_rate_topic.cgi. I can post the exact error message here later if you want to see it.
Second--is there an error in the readme.txt file?
You say the following in that file...
########################################
public_forum_page.pl (Templates)
--------------------------------
########################################
Find
########################################
$vars_wordlets{total_replies_header}
| ########################################
and add the follow
########################################
$vars_wordlets_rate{rating_column}---
Should there be an extra
tag at the beginning of that last text? My formatting didn't work properly until I added another | tag.
Found a typo in the instructions:
######################################## public_forum_page.pl (Templates) -------------------------------- ######################################## Find ########################################
$vars_wordlets{total_replies_header}
|
######################################## and add the follow ########################################
$vars_wordlets_rate{rating_column}

LOL twinspin at the same time Yes this is a typo in the readme. I just updated the ZIP. Did you create a thread_ratings folder (CHMOD 777) in your Members directory? There is no demo except on my local machine but here a screenshot:
this addon is sweet man, it works great, and looks very nice aswel, very good work!
what to you hope to do in the next release, beta/final?
Philipp
Can you make rate this topic a choice for the topic starter? On my board some people opt not to be rated. Please me know if you have will include in your next release.
Great Hack!!!
One question, I also have the gradient hack installed, and really hate to fool with this all since it's working, do you know where in your code, I need to add the gradient call, so I have a consistant bar?
Phillip,
Yes I do have the threads_rating folder in my members directory and proper permissions.
Any other thoughts?
The next version (Maybe next week) comes with a few control panel options. I didn't tried the gradient hack yet but I check it out. Thats odd. I don't know what this cause. Do you use mod_perl?
I noticed that the rating ends up equalling the last rating. I tested it out on my board and another board and saw same results. I looked at the files in the thread_ratings folder and they are still registering 1 vote even thought the topic has received multiple ratings. Anyone else getting the same issue?
Stang5_0, the gradient coding would go in this section
$vars_wordlets_rate{rating_column}
| Magnum
Stang5_0 - my apologies for adding a rating on your topic on your board but you have the same problem as me. I rated a topic that was previously rated a 5. I rated it a 1. It should average the 2 ratings and come up with 2.5 (rounds to 2) but the new rating is a 1.
Perfect, thanx Magnum!
Thats ok Garland, maybe there will be a fix and I can fix it hehehehe

Stang5_0
Take a look in the thread_ratings folder and see if it shows two votes. If we both have the same problem I would say it is a bug in the code. Thanks.
Jim
Thanks Garland you are right. I post a updated zip with a fixed ubb_rate_topic.cgi in the next minutes.
Showing up as one vote and 5 ratings
Just updated the ZIP. Please reupload ubb_rate_topic.cgi
I still am having problems. Here is what the rating file looks like now after two votes:
$votes = 1; $ratings = 5;$votes = 1; $ratings = 1;
Why not delete the original file and re-write it everytime someone votes?
My fault. Just updated the ZIP again. The new update work fine on my local machine.
Great that fixed it. I did notice another small issue. After you vote it does not display where you are being returned to.
Cool hack.
Just a idea, maybe make stars be able to be "halfs" as well as whole stars
so there can be 4 1/2 stars, etc. You get the idea I think.
I figured out my problem. Another stupid user problem (I'm the user). I had created a directory folder with an extra 's' in it. Once I renamed the threads folder properly it worked like a charm.
I probably need to check out version D to see what else has just been added.
Phillip,
Just one more request. Instead of saying were are taking you back to "Forum 3" can you make it display the full title? Thanks and great hack.
Jim
I was able to get the full forum name by adding another hidden value in the rating form. I also clean up formatting and spacing using the following slight modification to your code. Here is the main part of public_topic_page.pl file related to this hack: By moving the hidden values, the space between the drop-down box and the go button is smaller and consitent with the hop-to box. Thanks again for a great hack. Jim
How about rating Forums as well, some people have forums for games and such and so you could rate the game quality as well etc. Like a reader reviews system, but more flexible.
Rate this Topic 1.1 is out. See the updated first posting in this thread for more information .
YOUR MISSING cp_rate.cgi!
Well, I added everything and checked, double-checked, and triple-checked and found that the rating simple can not be displayed.
Phillip... My download did not contain the cp_rate.cgi files. So my CP "Voting Settings" admin does not work.
Sorry about misspelling your name there Philipp
Sorry . cp_rate.cgi is now in the ZIP. Mr. Man: Did you change the MinVotes variable?
Phillip can you make this mod so that if the topic has NOT been rated it shows up as so? like ive changed this to text instead of images and ive noticed that if you vote for a topic every other topic under it on the same pageshows this topic has not been rated but then if one of those gets replied to it removes the "this topic has not been rated" heres an example....... http://www.411hype.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=forum&f=4
I like this hack, but there is a bug: If you choose to let registered users only, even though unregistered users can't rate, they can see the "Rate topic" and choose their ratings (again, even though it isn't counted)
Can this mod be changed so that Topic rating is a option for the topic starter? There are some topics in a board or whole forum, where Ratings are not valid or wanted by the Admin (forum)or by the topic starter (individual post). Please reply. Great Mod.
nice hack .. what about an option to turn it on or off via control panel? changing some of the settings is nice, but you should be able to turn it off completely, as in the column doesn't even show up on the forum display.
Other than that, it's pretty nice
is great workin on ubb 6.01 german --- netscape need ---

Philipp,
It would be great if user name or number was also logged so if people abuse the ratings system they can be delt with. Thanks for a great hack.
wardx28 & Nefarious: Maybe in the next version melder: Thanks Garland: This feature is allready in 1.1
Great, I had not noticed since I did not change the setting (Registered Users Only?) in my control panel. Can you add the rating next to the user name so you can see if someone is voting improperly?
[ April 01, 2001: Message edited by: Garland ]
Added a option in 1.1a which allows the topic starter to disable rating. [ April 02, 2001: Message edited by: Philipp ]
Thanks a Million.

How can i set this up to work for one forum as a test? Private at that.
ultimatebb.cgi: Unable to open the required rating file at /u/web/urba19/cgi-local/ubb_rate_topic.cgi line 93.
is what i go in 6.02
Did you create a "thread_ratings" folder in your members directory and chmod the folder to 777?
Hi,
is it possible to disable ratings through cp and activate it just for one forum?
Not yet. This feature is planned for the next update
Darn, put it in the cgi dir.
Thanks.
Where is it that the topic starter has the choice to disable? Setting in cp is configed, But option does not show.
Sorry, forgot one template:
######################################## public_new_topic_form.pl (Templates) ------------------------------------ ######################################## Find ########################################
$show_sig
$disable_smilies
######################################## and add the follow ########################################
$no_rate

THANKS! So glad i read this.. haha.. I was wondering what was wrong with it. Anyway, I love this hack it's great... good job =)
Philipp, I keep getting this error when I submit the Voting Settings even though I make selections for all three categories: You did not complete all required fields. You did not complete: RateNA
» Use your browser's back button to return.
Any ideas?? Andrus http://saintsreport.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi
I had a similar problem when I upgraded to ubb6.03, try restoring all cp templates and rehacking the files.
Another Question: I have the "Ratings" in the "Topic Starter" field and missed the Topic Starter after installing the Hack? Waht's going wrong? btw.: Great hack!! Egbert
What and when is the next version?
I've been trying to figure out how to make this hack add 5 stars automatically after a user has posted a message, but I'm not really getting anywhere.
Can anyone help me?
Is this hack still under development? I didn't find it in Finished. and as i can read their is still some bug's in it.
anyone using it with 6.04c ?
i've got your hack and i have a lill' problem : Content-type: text/html Software error: Unable to open vars_rate.cgi file for writing. at /var/lib/apache/htdocs/cgi-local/cp_rate.cgi line 9. For help, please send mail to the webmaster ( [email protected]), giving this error message and the time and date of the error. This is my problem when i try to "update the voting settings" in cp.! Please help me!

Have you gotten anywhere on the part in only particular forums?
Greetings everyone! Just a quick note to let you all know that we succesfully installed this hack at The Temple of Blues running UBB 6.04e - works great, a great hack that took all of 10 minutes to install. We also had it working fine on a an old beta version of 6.0 RTM [ June 03, 2001 01:11 PM: Message edited by: RTM ]
Question?
Does this work kinda like the views hack that was released, where it creates a ton of individual files that log the rating of each thread?
Hi DJ Nemesis, This hack does create a subdirectory, in which it creates files on a per-topic basis including a file for the rating details as well as a file for IP logging.
i installed a hack and i have got a error : Error including required files: No such file or directory Make sure these files exist, permissions are set properly, and paths are set correctly hmm what is the problem ?? i have got a 6.04b version
Phillip, if you want it to automatically add this directory if it doesn't exist, pm me. [ June 09, 2001 09:59 AM: Message edited by: LK ]
The stars dont show when i rate a topic!? i uploaded all of em in my noncgi folder.. is there suppose to be a folder for em?
What and when is the next version?
Feature suggestion: tabulating and displaying the number of ratings underneath the stars - for example
**** 4 votes
or something to that effect. It would help give users a better weighting of the actual rating.
Great hack, it installed and works really well!

RTM -- go into your public_forum_page.pl Find: if ($votes > $vars_rate{MinVotes}) { if ($average > 0) {$ratestar = qq( );} if ($average > 1) {$ratestar = qq( );} if ($average > 2) {$ratestar = qq( );} if ($average > 3) {$ratestar = qq( );} if ($average > 4) {$ratestar = qq( );} } replace with if ($votes > $vars_rate{MinVotes}) { if ($average > 0) {$ratestar = qq( 1 vote);} if ($average > 1) {$ratestar = qq( 2 votes);} if ($average > 2) {$ratestar = qq( 3 votes);} if ($average > 3) {$ratestar = qq( 4 votes);} if ($average > 4) {$ratestar = qq( 5 votes);} }
everything works fine except when you vote it says :
FYI You are attempting to reach a page that does not exist. » Please use your browser's back button to return. any suggestions.

HELP,
The problem with this script is that it leaves columns blank when you don't choose to rate them. Consiquently I see a lot of 'empty' and very ugly space.
So for topics that haven't been rated I'd like to place a default '5' star(s) image that's faded or semi-blank. In Pseudo code:
IF No Rating Output 5 Star Images From Blank Star Image File
How can I do this, should be simple, but the code is spread around too many files to see.
I would like to see this hack made so the moderators could rate the topice and so the users could filter messages. That way you could turn your filter to only read 3 stars or above and get past all the BS posts.
The Link is totally dead edit: whoops, nevermind [ August 14, 2001: Message edited by: Jamma5600 ]
the link does not work, if anyone could help i would be most grateful.. thanks!
edit: thanks UBBdev!
