[6.1x] News Fader 4.1 Released!

UBB.Dev

Ok finally got this hack ported to 6.1. A very special thanks to LK and freeTV who helped port the hack to 6.1, and added a few code changes that I've implemented. Thanks again! Hack is very similiar to the 6.0X version, almost all code is in the same place. If you are upgrading your board from 6.0X, just re-install the entire hack by following the included Readme, there are no other upgrade instructions for the V2 series.

Post any bugs or problems here as well.

I have a question, what is News Fader?

Yes this appears to work with the accelerator, at least it does on my test board.

If you are unsure what the News Fader is, see my board at http://www.vhforums.com. Now I haven't upgraded it to 6.1 yet, but it's the same thing on the 6.05 board. I have it working on a 6.1 test board, but I am not providing access to that currently.

And the funny thing is that the Fader shows up but it won't fade, the text don't show up.

I am going to have to try again but it took out the first field in my CP and nothing was displayed on the web side. Pretty sure it is me since I am still new to this modificiation thing.

Guys, I'm about to upload 3.1 to the server. I advise EVERYONE who installed 3.0 to upgrade to 3.1 The code has been cleaned up A LOT (thanks LK) and the post and topic count feature works again. See my first post for the new download link.

i have 2 tiny problems.

1. if i want to update the news, i have to do it in the text file, update to my server, then do the samething in control panel then it work. If i just add or change news in control panel, it won't show up.

2. I use 3.1 now. I select dispplay both topic and post, but the topic and post didnt' show up. I went back to my control panel and see my previous selection uncheck.

Anyone know what the problem?

I installed the script and now when I go to Control Panel >> NewsFader Settings, it gives me an error message:

"Can't find string terminator ")" anywhere before EOF at /home/gamepro/public_html/needforbetterspeed/cgi-bin/cp_news_fader.cgi line 23."

Also the there is a bit of code on the very top of the page: Content-type: text/html .
I rehacked the script but I am still getting the same error message. I didn't get much sleep last night, and it is possible I made a mistake, any chance you could point me to the right direction, where to look for a fix?

Open CP_NEWS_FADER.CGI and find the line print qq(Thanks to LK for 6.1 optimization

Guys I have fixed some mistakes with my code I made in haste today. If you are having problems, redownload 3.1 and re-hack your files and use the new files I put in there.

With regards to the update directions, I worded it the way I did to avoid confusion.

If people seem to be having trouble understanding that, I will switch it.

Great hack... I installed it on my ubb 6.1.0.2 board, but i get this error:

Don't add the instructions (add:, replace with:, find:, etc) to the ubb_forum_summary.cgi

I downloaded the script again, it works great now, I can use all functions and edit the message from the control panel.

Ok guys, LK came up with another breakthrough today so there is about to be a News Fader 3.5. I know all these releases are annoying, but we're just trying to get this thing running as smooth as possible, and this recent fix is a BIG HELP to putting in your headlines. You no longer have to worry about the ","", stuff that needed to be after each line, and you can now use all "" in your HTML tags. Also, the need for the newfader.txt file is now gone. At one time it was only like that for a possible SSI thing, but I've never bothered with it.

Ok check my first post to download the 3.5, and there are upgrade instructions. It's a very easy upgrade, apart from of course re-entering your news headlines again.

Ok just updated zip file again, with a little change to some code, BUT if you have already loaded 3.5 don't worry about it, your code will work fine. Just a little re-write, nothing that major to worry about if you've already got 3.5 working.

It was the cp_common.pl file. It seems it wanted the proper formating. Typicaly I cut and past from the hack doument to the file. In this case I had to format it the same as the rest.

Cool SI, that damn wrap issue is really causing a problem. Never had to worry about it before, have no clue why I can't seem to get the wrap correct for some.

I checked and rehacked it again, but with no luck.

I'm having a little problem, that may be due to my Java script I have for my menus.

When I activate NF, the bar, image, and the whole catagory show up, but no news. Also, it gives me a Java error and won't load my menu script either.

I'm using the same menu as UBBDev...

d-talk: to move the NewsFader above your forum/posts/blah blah line, do the following:

Open public_forum_summary.pl, and find the lines:

Highlight and CUT all of the code between those two lines and "# End News Fader Stuff", INCLUDING those lines.

Paste all the code you just cut right below the line "sub Normal_Table_Top {". DO NOT copy that, just scroll up to find it. If you copy it, you will lose all the data you just cut and will have to start over.

One line above "# Start News Fader Stuff", add a "my $Top;" That should be all you need.

I just installed the 4.0 and it working great !!! Awesome. But, the picture i want to use, dosen`t show. Only a red cross instead of the pic. I have tried to test the link in the browser, and there it worked fine. I hace cleared cache, refreshed the browser, but nothing seem to work.
No big deal actually, but just wanted to try it out.

Another small bug fix and 4.1 is about to be released. There was a problem with displaying some Graemlins. Very easy upgrade but important.

Thanks for the great hack... install seemingly went very well, but I have a quick question.

How do I set the News Fader table width? Ever since adding the hack, our boards are approx. 25 pixels wider than the header and footer tables (set in Style Template at 600 pixels wide). Also, it is ever so slighly off center... is this a setting that can be changed or did I just choke on the install?

In the CP - Newsfader Settings, change 'News Fader Width' to 600.

I figured that was the solution, but setting it doesn't change the size to exactley 600 pixels... it seems to never get any smaller than approx 625-650 pixels regardless of the value I input... it gets larger though.

I must say, a good hack. YaBB has a simler feature built in and the uBB board has not, untill now. This is the first hack i even tried to put in and it kinda worked. when i go to the cp i see news fader settings in the primary settings thing, when i click on it it says this

I think it says this as i could not find one file UBB_FORUM_SUMMARY.CGI, is this in the cgi directory?i am assuming it is, u will have to excuse the stupididty of me, i have only just started the board and this is the first hack i have tried to put in.

Maurice, put all the ubb_forum_summary.cgi and public_forum_summary.pl (first the ubb_forum_summary.cgi code and then public_forum_summary.pl) in a new CGI file that requires vars_config.cgi, ubb_lib.cgi, ubb_lib_files.cgi, ubb_lib_filehandle.cgi, ubb_lib_filehandler.cgi/whatever and includes #!/usr/bin/perl as the first line, and in the end put:

View Source didn't show FDRmaxLoops and other parameter. Rehack PUBLIC_FORUM_SUMMARY.PL in TEMPLATE directory.

AgentX, you can't use percents in the News Fader, use pixels number, like 500. (CP - News Fader Settings - News Fader Width)

It's not wider here, but change the News Fader Width to 400/500.

how would i go about moving the actual news down a line? the hack is working and everything, but it'd be real nice to be able to actually move the text down 1 line, because it's not centered with the picture and whatnot.

Hmmm... I'm pretty new to UBB so first I tried installing this hack with MultiHack 2.0.1!
That didn't work for some strange reason...
Then I installed it manually and this time I didn't get even an error-message! It seemed to work fine and I configured it in the CP...
But when I went to my forum summary page, nothing showed up! Yes, everything was there like it was supposed to but the text just didn't show up!
I tried with different texts but it still wouldn't work...
I'm using UBB 6.1.0.3 on Windows 2000 Pro SP2... My webserver is Deerfield WebSite 3.1.11!

I hope this is where I'm suppose to ask questions concerning NewsFader installation.

I just downloaded 4.1 and installed it without any obvious problems. It shows up fine in the CP. I make my chages and clear cache.

When I open the forums summary page I get:

Undefined subroutine &main::forum_summary called at /home/bud/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi line 461.

I currently have installed Jimbos custom status/ranks.

Rehack a backed-up ubb_forum_summary.cgi

Hi,

I just rehacked my backup copy and still I get:

Undefined subroutine &main::forum_summary called at /home/bud/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi line 461

Q: This is the first time I decided to download my files, edit them and ftp them back up. I used NOTEPAD and did a copy/paste, sent it back up in asci, could this cause the problem? I generally log into the server with ssh shell and edit it with a linux editor but its long that way.

please let me know of any other ideas.

NEW PROB: When I try to update the news fader from CP, it says I do not have permission to access this area. I checked all my file permissions and they all look correct. Any idea what could cause this?

Hi all,

First off the News Fader is awsome and works great thanks to LK's help.

I do have one more glitch and I'm not sure which file to maybe rehack.

In cp / newsfader settings / "Board Stats Disply"; if If I select anything other then "No Display", then my Newsfader only shows the News Fader Title on my board and no more. It also shows on the bottom of the window screen "Done but with errors on page". I did clear cache first.

Another Bug but spotted besided the above mention.

In my main forums, you see Topics and Post and their respective numbers corresponding to how many. When you go into any Forum that shows some posts, the posts don't show up anymore.

Any clues?

This is a continuation of the above two POSTS. They all need to be read together. Sorry for so many but I found more clues.

The posts/replies do not show up when I go into the specific forum for only 1 member when I'm logged in as that member.

If your not logged in or any other member name logged in, you see everything.

Just 1 user account is showing this problem from the above post.

We still also have the problem from 2 posts above in the newfader setup.

I will be saving and rehacking 1 file at a time and continue this way with any luck unless someone has some direction for me. Sorry again for so many requests.

If you mean that you clicked on 'back', and the main site was ultimatebb.php, it's a bug with IE/Netscape + JS.

Update on my probs!

I rehacked each file again and now got another bug fixed.

Once I rehacked public_forum_summary.pl, I found I had a end of line error.

One Problem fixed from above listed problems was: when in cp/newsfader settings, I can now select forum stats adn they show up.

Something weird happened where my UBB reverted back to 6.1.0.3 after a succesful upgrade to .4.

I am having trouble now, and have been rehacking everything and am still getting.

I have one thing to do and that is private message box count on main page. I think that is the problem.

it may be my settings on netscape but does this work with netscape 6.2? cause when i test it on netscape 6.2 it's just blank (and i've tested it on other boards too,it's just blank),any suggestions? i'm using version 4.1 of this hack.thanks

I know how to add flash movie(s) into the newsfader as a replacement for the newsfader image. When it's ok by the author of this hack i post the instruction.

Any chance of getting some assistance/insight on putting the News Fader on the forum page? I think I'm on the right track with putting the UBB_FORUM_SUMMARY.CGI stuff in UBB_FORUM.CGI and the PUBLIC_FORUM_SUMMARY.PL stuff in PUBLIC_FORUM_PAGE.PL but I haven't had any luck.

I saw a few people ask this, but I never saw a clear answer to this question.

I installed news fader 4.1 on my board (ubb 6.2.1), rehacked it several times, and I still get no news, just the title heading and a blank box underneath.

After looking at the pages source code, I see stuff like this with the extra"" in the html:

is that "" supposed to be there? IF not, how do I get rid of it? TIA

thanks for the help LK, Got it working for windows users, won't work in Mac browsers, but then I went to your board and the News fader you have installed on your board works on my MAC! How'd you do it? Is it verison 4.1?

ok, I know no ones really reading, but thats ok, since my last post I installed a clean version of 6.31 and used the new version of fader for 6.3x,a nd it still wouldn't work on my mac. Then I realized maybe it was something in my style template, and sho enough, I had this in my style template:

and once I took it out, it worked fine. The problem is I need that in there some my fonts all work right, any ideas?
