First off I would like to say howdy to all!

Although this is more then likely my first post I have to say that I am a regular here and enjoy and appreciate all the information I get off this site!

I wanted to share my story of a UBB 5.x to UBB 6.x upgrade.

BACKGROUND/SITUATION:
  • FreeBSD Server
  • 600mhz PIII
  • 384mb ram
  • 100,000 board pages views / day
  • 20,000 - 30,000 posts /day
  • TRIMMED 5000 members (all active)
  • Server also serves about 1,000,000 html pages / day
PRE-UBB 6.x
  • server ram good (still 100mb free NO swap used)
  • speed good (well as good as UBB5.x could get
  • running all html based forums (except three private forums (CGI))
  • Server load between .3 - 1.5 (during peak periods)
  • Heavily hacked and modified
Post UBB 6.x Upgrade
  • server RAM still in good shape (100mb free NO swap used)
  • all forums running CGI (nature of ubb6)
  • layout, whos online, login, other minor hacks
  • server load at 5.00 - 30.00+
  • have trimmed 1000+ members
  • prune 20,000 messages daily
I wanted to shre this experience because I am hoping some other may have experienced this and have found a way to resolve a high CPU utilization problem. Or maybe just give something for admins with large busy forums to think twice before the upgrade.

Would a 866+ PIII help a great deal or just be like putting bandaid on the fatal wound?

NOTE: I am running the mod_gzip module for apache which helps reduce the server bandwidth from 200gig/month to around 100gig/month.

Thanks for your time!

Usually CPU load is higher when UBB 6 has just been installed. Once the cache has been built, the CPU load starts to drop.
