Im going to upgrade from 6.3.1.1 to 6.5, we had a problem with resources at our host where it was eating up a lot of the CGI script. Well 6.5 alleviate that problem or another bb the only option ?

Moving to New Members...

What's the URL to your board, please?
Posted By: WC Re: CGI Resources - 08/12/2003 2:35 AM
Well it had to be taken down due to resource usage, I had the UBB accelerator enabled as well...could this have contributed to the usage as well ?
Posted By: Charles Capps Re: CGI Resources - 08/12/2003 3:56 AM
Quite the opposite - the Accelerator is supposed to cut down on resource use.

Can you still get to your control panel?
Posted By: WC Re: CGI Resources - 08/12/2003 4:52 AM
Yeah I can
Posted By: Charles Capps Re: CGI Resources - 08/12/2003 7:21 AM
Good. On the intro page, how many pageviews have been received this month? (And on what day were your boards turned off?)
Posted By: WC Re: CGI Resources - 08/12/2003 9:35 AM
1687 and I recieved my notice on the 7th that the board was deactivated. I think part of it has to do with a cookie problem I have where IE uses dont stay logged in so people keep trying I suppose
Posted By: Gizmo Re: CGI Resources - 08/12/2003 10:14 AM
For me, a slow month is:
Pageviews (08/2003): 14994
Cache hit percentage: 35.11%
Posted By: Charles Capps Re: CGI Resources - 08/12/2003 10:17 AM
So, that's about 1700 pageviews in 7 days... that's about 250 a day, or one request every five minutes, give or take.

I can safely say that there's no chance whatsoever that your board could ever cause a legitimate load problem. Most shared hosts only really take notice of boards that hit 300-500,000 monthly pageviews (at which time we advise moving off to a dedicated server or to UBB.threads, followed later by a move to a dedicated server...)

I suggest you seek out a different host, as it's quite obvious that they're making excuses.

Supposedly it was 89 % of their total limit which I did find kind of odd because we didnt use it that much at all. Thanks for the advice smile
Posted By: Charles Capps Re: CGI Resources - 08/12/2003 6:05 PM
89% of their total limit of what, exactly?
Posted By: WC Re: CGI Resources - 08/12/2003 6:44 PM
Of all CPU resources on the server, however the email is entitled "CGI Script Resources" which had me thinking it was taking up CGI resources and not that of the whole server
Posted By: Charles Capps Re: CGI Resources - 08/12/2003 7:49 PM
Aha. They use process accounting to allocate a certain slice of CPU time to your account, then check it against a quota.

This is the first time I have EVER seen a host actually go that far in my nearly six years working with UBBs.

Who are these guys?

Moving off to another host would be the best thing to do right now... there's no telling what other surprises they may have in store.

Livin4.com

Well the first email I got from them was this
-------------------------------------
There is a CGI script on your account called ultimatebb.cgi
We had to rename this file to ultimatebb.cgi.resources
The cgi file was taking up almost all CPU resources on the server. It
is likely due to a poorly written script. If you can fix this issue,
you can rename the file back to what it was

After inquiring if I could keep it up for a limited time while looking for new hosting I got this as a reply
--------------------------------------------
We cannot leave it running if it will be using the same amount of
resources. It was running at 89%. That left less than 11% for all
other customers. There is no way we can allow that unless you use a
new/different bulletin board or other script.

But yeah I still don't see my UBB eating up all that much given the page views that I mentioned before. You guys heard anything about Ipowerweb ? Im thinking of using them
Posted By: Charles Capps Re: CGI Resources - 08/12/2003 10:58 PM
OKay, then I take back the process accounting thing, and thus return to what I said originally: They're nuts.

While one call to the UBB script could easily take up the entire CPU for a second or two (how else can the thing run if it doesn't even get CPU time confused ), there's no way they'd ever notice individual calls...

ubb doesn't use much from what I can see. our server hosts 2 UBB 6.5 boards and we don't notice any slowdowns except when members try for the fastest topic to 500 replied award. smile (the winning time right now is 15 minutes, I had to go through the code so that Mods and Megamods were effected by the flood protection)
Posted By: Gizmo Re: CGI Resources - 08/19/2003 2:37 PM
We used them before, their "ok" with services, but their support lacks. I'd reccommend www.hostnuke.com it's affordable and they won't whine like anyone else... We went about 5 gigs over quota and all we heard was an alert from a script stating "you're over your quota, concider upgrading", the hosts didn't really care lol...
