I've tried installing demo version of wwwthreads twice following the support library as best I could. I have zero knowledge of php and mysql. Hope you'll bear with me as I ask basic questions.

My site is on a host server (Unix) that has php 4 and mysql. Do I need my own personal web server and php 4 on my computer too? Do I need a php enabled directory on my computer or is my host server's sufficient? I keep screwing up the paths because I don't know where to install wwwthreads.

According to the uncompress step in the support library, it says not to put php files in the cgi-bin directory but in the upload step, it says to put the configure.inc.php in the wwwthreads folder in the cgi-bin directory. Where should I install wwwthreads? Do I put wwwthreads in both the public folder and the cgi-bin folder?

It was difficult to follow the support library because it refers to telnet steps and I don't have access to telnet. But I did read somewhere that telnet wasn't necessary.

I would greatly appreciate any help. Thanks very much.

Install it in any directory you choose. Edit the paths in config.inc.php and upload it to the same directory that you installed the rest of the files.

I am a rookie too, but I was able to do it without much grief.

Some tips:

As far as getting your paths right, connect to your site with your ftp program, go to the directory you will install it to, then look at the path in your ftp program. That was a big help for me.

I used the zip file, not the tar file, unzipped it on my pc, then had CuteFTP upload the wwwthreads directory and all sub-directories and files in one shot.

As far as the mySQL stuff goes, mine was super simple because my host (www.pair.com) has a web page wizard that walked me thru everything.

Keep your head up. It may take you a few tries, but you will get it.
