Recently I have seen some odd things under Anonymous User(s). It will look like this:

65.207.42.45
65.207.42.48
65.207.42.32
65.207.42.67
65.207.42.46
65.207.42.64

It will have 6 or 7 from the same block, and they are all doing the same thing such as 'Viewing list of forums'.

Then they will all disappear at the same time.

Anyone else see this?

I've seen this....
especially with AOL.

I don't know the technical terms from it. But it's really the same person. Their IP address is just dynamic and keeps changing.

Spiders and Bots will do this too sometimes.

It's nothing wrong with threads... it's just when the IP changes... threads is only able to track them by IP... so they appear as multiple people.

I see that alot on my site. I think it is probably search engines, as each seperate ip is on a different page at the same time.

There is a really cool hack around here that will show you what type of Operating System and Browser the Anon users are using.... it also shows you the refer info.... so you can see where they were before they got to where they are.

It helps you identify the search engines.

I think JustDave wrote it.

I can't find a link right now... I'll keep looking. But it's very cool.

I think Josh refers to this modification for the user agents of anonymous users.

I have also seen this lurch and it always comes from one user who uses AOL. The funny thing is that when this happens it might increase the Maximum users online showing more users than actual ones :P

Thanks all, I will check out that hack.

What worried me was I thought someone was trying to register a bunch of usernames at once. The only reason I could think of for someone to do that would be to turn around and spam the boards.

Feeling better now
