For some reason my graemlins just show up as text i.e. : smile :
and quotes are displayed as text too [ quote ] [ /quote ] - they are not being parsed...any idea why?

Sounds like UBB isn't turned on in that forum. Edit each forum and make sure UBBCode is enabled.
