For those who are working on template mods for threads, I thought I might help with some tips for smarty template use. Threads 7+ now uses the smarty templating engine for all public pages and makes it a good bit easier to develop for/with.
The first one is a crashcourse in smarty. It may take you about 10 minutes to read and will give you a foundation on the use and abuse
of smarty template mania:

The second one is the repository for ready-made smarty addons and plugins. If you are looking for a way to do something in smarty, it may have already been built
