My message forum is using up 100% of the 200 MB's allowed on the server on a daily basis. I have to clear the cached pages every day.

There is nothing set where it should cache anything. When I clear the cache, disk usage goes back down to 93 MB's used instead of maxed out at 200.

This hasn't been a problem since I started the forum in 2001 but within the last 2 months, it happens every day or every other day.

Any suggestions?

Well, when content is accessed it's cached to speed up the process of serving the page...

Sugguestions, well... upgrade your plan for starters... 200mb isn't much of anything...

If upgrading isn't an option, disable the cache (I'm pretty sure that's an option in classic)

It's a very, very small board. After I clear the cache, I only use 93 MB's and don't want to upgrade when I really don't need the space. I believe I have cache disabled, at least with the options available with classic.

I don't really recall if you had the option to disable cache. But it looks clear to me that your problem is:
1. been there since 2001. You probably have a lot more traffic now.
2. More than likely spammers have found your site adding to your page hits.
If you are not willing to upgrade classic to threads or upgrade your host plan. Then you need to tighten your security at your site. One option is to make your board private and moderate registrations. Another is to ban spam IP's. Just for starters.

All of the above is a lot of work on your part.

Okay I took a peek in classic 6.7.3.
You can disable cache at:
Control Panel » Primary Settings+Advanced Options
Deselect Retrieve Pages from Cache:
The note says "WARNING: Disabling the page cache will cause a severe performance hit."

Yeh, classic was known for preformance issues, especially if you're disabling the cache and not using the php accelerator; so you may be trading issues of "needing more space" to "needing more resources" which will likely cause issues with your host.

I have cache disabled like mentioned above (I did that last week). I have everything disabled that has anything to do with cache. I'm not concerned about performance because it's such a small forum with few posts.

I don't have any spam posts at all. How could spammers be affecting my cache, which I have to clear once daily?

Once I clear the cache, my forum is using 93 MB's. Within 1 day, it will jump up to 200 MB's of disk usage. I clear the cache, and it goes back down.

Well something is creating the cache files. So if someone visits your site it will build them.(Spammers,Visitors,Spiders)
They don't need to post to impact the cache just visit and view or search.
If you have disabled the cache option above then the next is
Control Panel » Primary Settings
Enable UBB.classic™ Accelerator? deselect this item.
It will build a cache on its own regardless of the other setting.
See if that one is disabled.

BTW, I tend to agree with Gizmo's statement. 200MB is not much today. Might be time to try another host.

BB.classic™ Accelerator is disabled as well. I also have Normal URLs using Query Strings and not the Spider-friendly url's or Short spider-friendly URLs.

I can buy more space if needed, but it just seems odd that all of a sudden this is an issue. If I buy more space, I think I'll still have the same problem, I don't know.

Kinda stumped now.
The only other items I can think of is.
Control Panel » General
Community Directory
Disable all Directory Content Islands:
And
Control Panel » General
Recent Visitors
Disable Enable Recent Visitors?
Not sure on those two items but it appears they would use cache.

Thank you all for your help. The issue finally resolved! laugh It's been 3 days now and I haven't had to clear the cache and it's well below the allowed disk usage. Thanks again for all your help.--Al

It would be nice to know what you finally did to resolve your issue.

All of the above, but instead of maxing out in 1 day, it took a couple of days. Last night I noticed it. So, for now, the forum is only viewable to registered members until I upgrade to UBB.threads.

I think you need to find a new host as Gizmo suggested before venturing to ubbthreads.
The issue may get worse if you stay with your existing host and upgrade.

not to mention, the migration to threads on your "small host" you'll run into issues with the importer (as it'll duplicate all of your data and you'll be running 2 copies of the same data, which would be going above your quota)

That's true never though of that.
Unless you run the upgrade on your own box then delete everything on the host site and republish with just the new version. But what a headache.
