While poking through the source I noticed that the poster's images are not on the local server.
If someone is having a poor/overloaded connection you will have to wait until the picture is loaded (on flat mode things may get worse).
The ideea is to copy the user pictures on the local server and run a cron on a daily/hourly basis to check them (HEAD) or to have a checkbox "refresh my picture" in the basic profile screen.
