I'm just looking over things, so apologize if these are dumb, newbie questions.

1. Stability. Are there any really large sites where this software is used, like several thousand users, 30,000 posts, etc.? How has it held up?

2. Speed. How would you compare the server intensive tasks to other alternatives? Will most good servers work well with the script?

There are several big name sites using WWWThreads but I don't know how heavily they are used. You can take a look at the In Use page for some samples.

General feedback is that the program is quicker than many other forum products because of the SQL backend and the option of running under mod_perl. But again I don't have any realy data on this, just going by what I have heard from other users.
