I recently been working on the Active Topics script and it's really come along quite nicely I think! I even have it so that indivdual users can set their preferences for how the information is displayed. Check it out at:

http://www.arlo.net/ubb/cgi-bin/active.cgi

To change how many topics are displayed or how it is formatted click on the preferences option.

In addition to what is visiable, there is also an option where you can define certain forums to be excluded from the active topics display. It now should work properly on Windows based systems as well.

So, right now, I'm looking for other ways to improve this script. What else would you like to see it do? I'd also like to hear from others who have it installed but maybe changed the formatting a little.

Dave:

I LIKE IT! Anyway you can post the hack so I can add it to my site?

I will post the code in the next day or so. I just added an option for a low overhead version where you can have the script save the output to a file each time someone posts, instead of the script being run each time! I just need to add the text on what modifications to make to ubbmisc.cgi (for user selectable preferences) and postings.cgi (for low overhead version).

Ok, I have it finished, I think... I have it installed on my site, and it appears to be working. Let me know of any problems here please... Also, any suggestions are also welcome on how to improve the script!

Demo: http://www.arlo.net/ubb/cgi-bin/active.cgi
Source: http://www.arlo.net/ubb/cgi-bin/active.txt
Install Instructions: http://www.arlo.net/ubb/cgi-bin/active_inst.txt

Features include:
  • standalone CGI script like memberlist
  • can also be used with SSI like original
  • can be configured to display the information in 4 different ways:
  • summarize first post of a topic
  • summarize last post of a topic
  • no summary, just a brief overview
  • original format for use with SSI
  • all the above options except SSI user configurable
  • low overhead configurable so that a seperate page is generated everytime a new post is made

Enjoy!

I have added in your hack into the UBB. One sugestion. The links for the previews of the topics don't work. It would be nice to have them working so I can just scan over the topics and links.

Dave - please provide a new link to the txt file for your active script.

This is what I have been looking for. Also can I call this script from my index page with the summary setup? Where the default will only show say the top 10 topics instead of the top thirty as you are showing. Plus I want to have this on a smaller layout for columns.

Is this possible?

guess Dave has died and gone to ????. Since he still hasn't corrected his link to the txt file for active topics.

This sounds like a great hack, but is there a way to show the latest posts as an SSI call to your front page? I'm guessing it would be similar to the search.cgi?action=getdaily function, but what I'm looking for is a way to list the name and link to the most current 5-10 posts on the boards at any given time. Has anyone done a hack like this? I searched the boards, but if I missed it, let me know and I'll search again.
I did try Mutt's hack for total topics and posts called from SSI and it works fine with version 5.44b! I am getting ready to put in on my front page, just wondering if there was another hack available that I wasn't aware of (I'm new here!)

I guess dave isn't going to provide this hack since he has removed his links in his message. So why do we keep this topic around. WHY not delete this topic. He only wnats us to look at it not provide it any longer.

Or at least explain why he removed the links with no explanation.

these were the links tha have been deleted:

I found one, but I tried to use it and got a cgi error: could not locate UltBB.setup blah....blah...blah in the cgibin dir. BS! it's there!

I would like clean copies too!

Sorry, been pretty busy lately, and recently moved my site to a new server. All the links should be working now. I have modified this script a bit to work with my "Who's Online" hack. If you don't have that installed, remove the following lines from the script:

Code
code:

Thanks to whoever e-mailed me regarding this, and sorry about it going missing for a bit! I don't really support this hack as I'm busy as H-E-L-L (f-u-c-k-i-n-g filter) , but will try to answer questions if I can.

hunter - people don't have to support their hacks. You are lucky that some do. If you're going to dig up a thread from January and expect all the links to still fire then you're being over hopefull. Please don't complain about old threads - if you don't want to read it then don't. Easy.

I never asked for support just the link to get the hack.

If you can't figure that out by my postings than you can't read.

Thanks Dave for the the new links.

It's great.

active.cgi is returning an error, but it fails to say what. I'm running on NT.

"The specified CGI application misbehaved by not returning a complete set of HTTP headers."

I'm also running version 5.39.

Help please!

And it still works!

OK...next question(s).... [Linked Image]

How do we enable smilies in this hack, and how do we strip out the ubb code tags?

Thanks in advance!
Posted By: NBAustin Re: Active Topics Hack - 03/29/2000 2:22 AM
Oops!

Another question....

I have the script set to show the first post.

I DO have one forum where I'd like the LAST post to show.

What code do I need insert (and where) to make the exception?

Thanks in advance....

I have used Active Topics since it first came out and my users are hooked. Here is the problem.

I jsut moved my UBB to a new, faster, server. My main website is on a different machine. Is there anyway I can still use Active Topics?

This is how it used to be called:

When I moved the UBB I tried this:
>

This only produces an error.

Any ideas?

I like this one a lot, very nice! [Linked Image]

Using the SSI feature, is there an easy way to limit the threads listed by today's date? I'd like to just list "Todays Active Topics".

Thank you smile

It's a great hack! You can see it on www.FlixUSA.com

Hit "Hot 30 Topics!" in the upper left.
