Mod Name / Version: Forum Instructions 2.0

Description: This allows you to add a bit of text to the top of the postlist page. It's forum specific, so you can have different info for each forum.

Version 2.0 adds the ability to edit the stuff at the top of each forum. This is a PERFECT way to have a banner ad for each forum, without having to have separate forum headers for each forum.

We use it here to give links and instructions at the top of each forum.

Working Under: UBB.Threads 6.3

Mod Status: Beta

Any pre-requisites: none

Author(s): JoshPet of www.joshuapettit.com

Date: 09/13/03

Credits: Needed for ThreadsDev - upgraded for Aaron (shortbus) at www.ultimatenurse.com

Files Altered: postlist.tmpl

New Files: /admin/selectforuminfo.php, /admin/editforuminfo.php, /admin/doeditforuminfo.php

Database Altered: none

Info/Instructions: Upload 3 new scripts to the /admin directory of your ubbthreads install and apply the changes included in zip file. Make sure your "includes" folder is writable so you can create/edit the includes through the online interface.

Then near the bottom of your admin menu, you'll notice a new option - "Edit Forum Instructions".

Click that, select a forum, and enter your text, links, HTML etc... It'll be included at the top of that specific forum.

Disclaimer: Please backup every file that you intend to modify.
If the modification modifies the database, it's a good idea to backup your database before doing so.

Note: If you modify your UBB.Threads code, you may be giving up your right for "official" support from Infopop. If you need official support, you'll need to restore unmodified files.

Great mod Josh. Is there a way for it to work with UBB code so that the Scrolling & Blinking features, etc, will work with that so text can stand out a little more?

You can use standard HTML - so can include the marquee function etc., in your HTML code.

Up exactly. It mimics the "header" function of each board. So since it's Admins only.... you can use HTML.

Thanks much for this additional capability, Josh...I've been using your earlier version to have some instructions on my forums, and this'll make it easier to handle (though I'm not going to implement it until I get back from this long trip I'm on, because I don't trust myelf to not screw something up, and I'd rather be at my main computer to handle any difficulties I cause).

By the way, as I remember, one has to be careful about quotation marks (e.g., in a link...), and I wonder whether the instructions note this little foible...

Finally, for some purposes, it would be handy to be able to have instructions on the "show" pages (flat and otherwise), which I guess would be analogous to what you've done for the postlist. Would this be hard to implement by analogy (e.g., for someone who doesn't know much about tables, etc.), and would it involve any other additional templates, besides showflat and show threaded?

Thanks again! Tony

Given that this works like the forum headers.... it's "included" rather than being actually in the postlist.php code.... quotes aren't a problem. You can use HTML with quotes as normal. It won't cause any trouble.

I was able to modify this mod to work as as place to put forum specific banners, in lieu of a forum-specific header:
http://www.telenovelas-online.com/foros/postlist.php?Cat=&Board=gabyspanic

Since HTML works in it No need to modify at all. Simply place the link in each place and you got a banner

What I modified was the position of the table row for the instructions in postlist.tmpl. Instead of being beneath the cat table, it's above it. I think it works better that way for banners
